Hi, i recently purchased a Toshiba EP30KB as i had lots of HD dvd's from my Xbox HD player collection, i've now found out that the Toshiba EP30 is the same model as the US A30 according to other forum's.

The problem i need answering is the A30 has had terrible reviews when used in 1080p mode on a 1080p hdtv obviously, this included failing all Silicon Optix's HQV tests, and it failed badly on deinterlacing, bad jaggies, bad moire, bad standed dvd up-scaling and artifacts when set and played on 1080p output.

These problems were resolved when switched back to 1080i, also if you have a hdtv that can truely handle 1080p/24fps then this will resolve a lot of problems mentioned. Have these problems been resolved with firm-ware updates and is the EP30KB truely the same as the US A30 and if so it must have the same performance related issues on 1080p out put.

I ask for your help as i wanted to buy a cheap EP30KB for my sister who has a 40" full 1080p hdtv and i have all the films for her to watch plus i wanted it for upscaling her normal dvd's, i have a 1080i hdtv and the only bad thing about the one i use is it's extremely grainy compared to my old xbox HD player.

Any informed help would be much appreciated and i apologise for this rushed post.

I have an EP30 and am very pleased with it. Especially when you factor in what I paid for it and the cost of the (decreasing number of) HD-DVD discs available.
I've found Toshiba to be very helpful and supportive and they've put out at least two firmware updates to the player.
The biggest problem I've found with it is if you set it to UP TO 1080p/24fps and everything else to AUTO then it won't play DVDs or SD extras very well (jerky, jumpy, jagged). You have to go back in and set it manually. The reverse is that once you do this it defaults to 30 fps on HD. It's a pain to keep switching and stopping discs, especially given the rubbish Universal make you watch before you get to menu!
Toshiba tell me that there is a firmware update that cures this.
The point is that the picture is fine once set up correctly for the source. 1080p DVD upscaling is excellent for the money!
