As a new convert to Home Cinema I recently purchased a Toshiba HD E30 dvd player for connection to my Onkyo 605.

A problem has arisen;the player plays 'normal' DVd's,but doesn't recognise HD.

I bought the player on the Internet and I am reluctant to go through the hassle of returning.Having read various articles about firmware updates etc, I wonder is this the solution.

But again as a novice I shudder to think on trying to download the update via ethernet connection(the computer is in a different room to the player.

Has anyone a solution.....Laymens terms only please!

If you mean you can't get the Dolby TrueHD light to come up on your amp, this is because the Toshiba is unable to send this data via bitstream i.e. in its native format. What happens is, the Toshiba will decode the Dolby TrueHD signal to PCM and then send this to the amp via HDMI. The amp should then show as playing Linear PCM. If this is happening, you are getting the proper HD sound as it should be, it's just the sound has already been decoded by the amp.

Think you mean 'by the player', Prof

No I haven't updated the firmware. The two discs included with the player were '300' and 'The Bourne Supremacy'(both HD titles.)

Just to clarify the its the disc that the player doesn't recognise, not a HD sound issue with the Onkyo amp.

Thanks!
