Pioneer Sc-lx81, I think I have sorted it though, I need a HDMI switch box again!

connect a hdmi lead from your Hd-dvd player to one of the spare inputs on the back of your amp and then use another from the output to the back of your tv.

You don't need an HDMI switch box. Connect it to one of the spare HDMI inputs and select that input in your AVR.
