how much was 31,000 yen at the time?

If JR 149s were remade what price would they be now? And they would sell by the bucketload.

How I regret not buying a pair 30 years ago (approx)

Probably £600-1,000! I bought two pairs a few years ago, including one pair in their original box! Done nothing with them though due to space and other restrictions. I suppose I should move them on and let someone enjoy them!

+1 on the AR18s still got a perfect pair boxed in the in the loft. 🙂

No you haven't. I can assure you the rubber surrounds will disintegrate the first time you try to play them :-D

Tannoy Berkeley. They had 15" dual concentrics and were a complete joy.

They cost me exactly £3oo brand new, although I don't think that was exactly 'budget' at the time.

Had to lose mine when I moved and just didn't have a big enough listening room for them. :boohoo: :boohoo: :boohoo:

Mission 760iSE, £150 new, got a set for stereo, now using as rears. Hooked up to a good amp, amazing frequency response.

Quad ESL57, don't think my Dad paid more than £300 for them new back in 1964 ish?

Erm...

I have been looking at figures for the average weekly wage in 1964 and it seems to be about £16 - £18 (depending on source).

£300 would not be the price for a pair of 'budget' speakers if they cost over 18 weeks average income.

I have just checked my father's diaries (they go back to 1965) and he was earning about £26 a week (with overtime) as a skilled miller/lather in a local engineering company in 1966.

there may be a flaw in the plan 🙂

Agreed, £300 in 1964 is definately not in the "budget" category!!
