Yes, it was on Radio 4 this morning. He left a note in his car, which was parked near the bridge. I suppose it will emerge later why he felt that he had to jump from the bridge. Very sad. One feels for his brother Ridley and for the rest of his family.

Sad news.

One of few directors of recent times that realised that the best action movies also need some heart and soul - not just explosions (though he did them damn well, too)...

Oddly enough I was looking at clips of Top Gun last night. From what I can gather (from a posting on another forum from someone who worked with him) he was going through bouts of on-going ill health, perhaps he'd recently received some further bad news along those lines. Shame.

They reckon he had brain cancer and thought he'd finish it all. Big shame he did a quite a few good films, loved Man on Fire, crimson tide, enemy of the state, top gun & true romance.

Tragic :(

Lots of charming tributes at BBC.co.uk from colleagues etc, but the following, from musician and part-time food delivery driver Simon Bailey, sums up TS's big heart:

"I met him often. I was a guitarist with South African band Just Jinjer, recording my solo album in LA whilst working part time for an exclusive food delivery company to make ends meet.

I delivered to his house several times a week. He was by far the nicest man of all our thousands of clients, including hundreds of celebrities.

He would always invite me to sit down in his kitchen, and asked me how my life was and how my record was coming along. This is quite extraordinary for LA.

When I told him that I was leaving to mix my album outside LA, his send-off was the warmest by far of all our customers, and he gave me four times his always hugely generous tip.

I am very sad indeed to hear of his passing, and was so looking forward to arranging a party for him in South Africa, where he told me he was intending to visit.

I know that I am not alone in my experience. Within our delivery company he was known as the nicest customer. I am shocked at the news."

BBC.co.uk:

"An autopsy was carried out on Monday. Results will not be known for several weeks but the [LA] coroner denied reports that Scott had a brain tumour... ...'According to the family, to their knowledge, he did not have any issues with any cancers,' Los Angeles Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told reporters."

Seems that Sky News and the Daily Mail are wide of the mark, again...
