My only experience of NAD was a CD player that promptly broke a couple of weeks after it went out of warranty. That was a bit annoying after having a Rotel CD player that lasted about 18 years and I should know not to judge any manufacturer based on a sample of one but it did put me off.

I've ditched CD players for good now anyway and will just rip all CD's I buy, stick them on a NAS and stream them.

I've only had 1 x Nad cdp albeit 2nd hand which broke after a couple of months. I stick with Marantz for cd's now they sound good and are bulletproof

I have a Marantz CD6004 (maybe 3, dunno) lying around in a cupboard somewhere. I liked it's delivery, well rounded and nothing out of proprtion in any way but just cannot be hassled faffing around with CD's anymore.

I have always been a believer.

Since ditching my serious kit I have mostly avoided getting involved with sophisticated equipment, my last couple of setups were both pretty expensive (£10k+) and both involved me in the minutae of hi-fi rather more than I liked at the time.

The advent of Spotify has changed my perspective on music listening immensely, I have come to the conclusion that, good as Spotify may be for musical enjoyment, it is flawed in hi-fi terms. This has lead me to the conclusion that, with Spotify as a source, I would not spend more than £2k on a setup.

About 3 years ago I was contemplating a minimatlist AVI ADM9 setup, I wrote about it on here, but the the money disappeared in a house move, and that was the end of that.

Until know. In the new year I shall be looking again, the latest ADM10 are not available in the right finish, so out of the question. Used 9RSs or better fetch around £700-800, a definite possibility, paired with a Spotify Connect equipped streamer (toslink out), a setup should cost around £1k.

The alternative would be a streamer/dac/preamp into a pair of Adam Artist6, again the combo should cost around £1k with say, a Stream Magic 6.

In both cases we are talking about a pair of speakers and one box, almost Chebbyesk.

One thing you can bet your house on is music streaming will all end up being CD quality or higher in the nearish future. As broadband speeds increase so the quality of the streams will also increase. You can see that happening in parallel with movie streaming. There's already some 4K streaming out there and once they see there's enough of their subscriber base to warrant it, they'll push the higher rez through as they're competing with the Blu Ray market.

The Quad... had two optical connections (essential and a deal breaker) amongst all the other digitalliness on offer.

to expand/add connectivity to devices equipped with 1 optical in you could get toslink/ optical switch ( some of them comes with a remote control)

Thanks. Sounds like a bit of a lash-up though. I try my best to keep things as simple/minimal as possible with the least clutter.
