Hi,

I tried to calibrate my Pioneer 37krl TV using the THX Optimiser and purchased the THX Glasses for the colour/tint test. However I've been unable to get it set so that the bars are the same blue all the way across as it shows it should be. It mentions changing the Hue also but I've no idea how to do this. Please can someone advise if the bars should be identical blue all the way across (or if there will always be a marginal change?) or if it is even possible with this TV. If so how am I able to change the hue?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Denis

Might sound like a silly question but is the THX optimiser you are using on a PAL or NTSC disc? The reason I ask this is technically Tint control has no effect on a PAL signal as it was introduced to correct phase errors in the NTSC signal between source and receiver,a tint control is provided on NTSC television sets, which allows the user to manually adjust the phase relationship between the color information in the video and the reference for decoding the color information, known as the "color burst", so that correct colors may be displayed.

There are also other factors that may be at play here such as your TVs greyscale because if this is not correctly calibrated (this can not be done by eye) then your TVs colour will always be out of ballance (in a ideal world Red,Green and Blue should all read 100% accross the IRE scale)

This is one of those bits of advice you don't want to hear.

My very first attempt at callibrating my set (then a lowly Toshiba 32") was using the THX Optimiser on Finding Nemo. I couldn't get the blues to all appear the same, no - even with some of the 3D colour management controls maxed out. And I found it was so subjective, even when I had them as close as I thought I could, watching HD content showed that I'd recked the colours completely. If I remember it was much too red and the yellow was completely drained.

So I graduated to the HD Essentials blu-ray disc (got mine from Amazon). It is the next step up before going for the whole colour sensor / laptop set-up (which I eventually went for, thankfully).

So no, you won't get it perfect. But if it gets you a picture you enjoy watching - stick with it. If not, consider taking the next step ... !

DJ Krime and Mez thanks for your help. It was a PAL disk and I couldn't get the blues all the same either. WIll give it another blast ignoring the tint and using the what hifi how to guide, on how to do it without the glasses using the colour bars on the next test screen, otherwise will be taking your advice and trying out the next level!
