The time has come to thin out my system, I'm finding less and less time now playing vinyl and CD's and I'm connecting to my amp via ApptX using my phone, it's far more convenient. My system comprises of Rega Planar 3, RB330 arm with Ania MC cartridge and the Rega speed controller, Jays Audio CDT2 Mk2, Electrocompaniet Phone stage (Cant recall the suffix), Gato Audio 250s NPM and playing through Audio Physic Classic 15 floorstanders.

The idea is to sell the turntable, turntable controller, CD player and phono stage and replace all of this with a HiFi Rose RS 151 rip my CD's to it and stream my music, radio, Tidal etc. I'm aware the Amp I have has a DAC installed but my feeling is the DAC in the RS151 is of a much higher quality, this being an ES9039 pro(ess). By all accounts a fairly hi end DAC.

Does anyone have any experience with this Streamer/DAC and what are your thoughts?

Doesn't your Gato Audio 250s NPM provide network streaming? In which case do you want to consider ripping your CDs to a NAS and utilising the features you already have? Unless you have 4k to burn on the Rose RS?

It does but there is no screen, I've never properly looked into the NPM aspect of the amp. But it's a good shout.

I have the Rose RS520, which I love to bits! It has the amplifier built in and you can easily add a 4TB SSD if you want a one box solution.
Thanks, I did look at the RS520 but I really like my Gato amp, lovely sound so would prefer to go with a streamer that doesn't have amplification. But the 520 looks like a great bit of kit.

I also looked into the whole Roon thing ... Maybe I'm hard of thinking but has anyone got their head around how it all works? I seem to recall having a look at it a few years ago and it all seemed a bit fiddly. If I can gather my thought son it, then it may be I could utilise the Gato NPM aspect that my amp has fitted.

Roon does have a bit of a learning curve to set it up. And it's a significant investment, either as a monthly subscription or once-off payment. If one is seriously considering Roon then I'd invest in the Roon Nucleus One server. Yes you could build your own with a Raspberry Pi, or install the server software on a PC, but the Nucleus One makes it all almost plug and play. And it's good value at around 500 quid.

Roon should be seriously considered if you want to store your own music and access it anywhere, in addition to the normal Spotify, Tidal services etc. There are alternatives like Plex, Volumio and Audirvana, and all charge for similar functionality, with Audirvana and Roon being more expensive.

Coming back to Hifi Rose - they make standalone streamers, I would look used, as they've just released an updated model.

A few years ago, the Rose marque was the finest on the market and still is an excellent choice but I think the top end Eversolo DMP-10, might edge it in terms of user interface. The Eversolo is slightly cheaper, I think the Rose has a nicer screen and doesn't seem to be overdone?

Ideally if you know a dealer that sells both (Premium Sound sells both) ask if you can compare the two, see which one you like best. 🙂

The Auralic Altair G2 Streamer is also another excellent alternative, it's the pricer of the two but worth checking.

If you set your heart on the Rose, you can't go wrong 🙂
