Thoughts on B&W 684 Av pack and MA Silver Series following demo

I spent yesterday afternoon demoing the B&W 684 Av Pack, Moniter Audio RX6 Av Pack with the Denon 2310 and Marantz BR6004 and thought I'd share my thoughts.

The MAs had great clarity, certainly more so than any speaker I've listened to before however I was surprised at how little I could hear the low frequencies when listening in stereo.  The situation was slightly improved when using the Marantz but with the Denon even when listening to a bass guitar there seemed very little weight.  The B&Ws lacked the final smidge of clarity when compared to the RX6s but had a much more rounded sound to my ear and with these speakers I certainly preferred the Denon.

I also demoed the various combinations for AV.  Once again the MAs had great clarity, but the B&Ws had a much more rounded sound (the ASW610 clearly outpunching the MA R370HD that was provided for the demo) and seemed to integrate the surround effects better.

Unfortunately the shop couldn't provide the RXFX and subwoofer to demo or the Yamahas that I had hope to try too, I think I'll be trying those before I commit my cash but I was definitely surprised to find that the 684s won this round.

Hi KitW

Nice write up. Definitely listen to the complete Silver RX AV6 package before deciding as i believe that when the RX-FX and the RXW-12 are added it will be a completely different ball game.

Yamaha AV amplifiers work superbly with Monitor Audio speakers and the RX-V1065 or even better the new RX-V2065 should do the trick nicely.

Thanks

Thanks Rick. ÿThe main problem seems to be finding somewhere in central London that will allow me to demo them.

I actually had one guy shout at me on Saturday because I decided that listening to it set up in his store wasn't going to be good enough to decide either way....weird!

MA's take an age to run-in perhaps they needed a bit more time, no shotage of bass in my system with or without the SUB engaged.

Same here

Must admit I was surprised at how good the bass is without the sub. I was origonally gonna get the RX8's but the RX6's were more than enough for my room.

Certainly not the best way to endear a potential customer to you, I wouldn't think!
