Hello,

Any thoughts / feelings about the Onkyo HT-X22HDX?

They're on amazon for £229, I was tempted originally by the Z5500 - but have been put off since!

Regards,

Alex.

Hi Alex,

I've had mine (the 5.1) delivered yesterday! Make sure you check if it's the 2.1 or the 5.1 version for that price. The HT-X22HDX is sold as 2.1 on it's own, with the add-on SKS-22X providing front and rear speakers. You can find the 5.1 sold together for around £300-310 if you hunt around. I bought mine from Peter Tyson, great service with free next day delivery.

I haven't got it completely set up yet, I'm waiting until a bit later this morning before I start waking everyone up by drilling into the walls!

I like the look and feel of it, it all seems really well put together, and for the price I'm really happy with it.

Ideally I would have loved the B&W 685 theatre with a nice amp (I have the 685's in my hifi), but space and money means that wasn't going to happen!

I'll let you know how I get on. I'm very happy with it so far. If you have any questions I'll try to help!

Thanks Jon,

I liked the idea of buying the 2.1 setup first, and then upgrading in the future - so it's nice to speak to someone with the full setup!

Regards.

Well Alex, it's all set up so I thought I'd let you know how I got on.

We watched Batman Begins, and the Dark Knight to test it out. Put simply, it's transformed our movie watching experience! OK, it might not hit the heights of many other home cinema setups, but it's a good sound that for the first time has immersed us in the atmosphere of the movies.

Before: Rotel RA-05 - B&W 685 (stereo) --- it sounded good, great quality, but only stereo.

After: Onkyo HTX-22HDX & SKS22X --- wrapped around in sound, a much better movie experience.

Even with this being a relatively cheap way of achieving 5.1, it has completely changed how we experience a film, and I certainly wouldn't want to go back to watching/listening to movies in stereo. I think I've still probably got a little tweaking to do with individual speaker levels, but I'm very happy with it, it was very easy to set up.

Alex, I know you said you are thinking of just getting 2.1 to start with, but if you are getting it with primarily films in mind, (I wouldn't listen to music through it), then I'm sure the extra speaker set is worth another £80.

All the best!
