I have recently connected a Thorens td104 mk 2 to a Teac reference 300 amp.

There is humming through the left speaker when i turn everything on. After some wiggling of the earth spade connection to the amp, the humming goes, and the turntable plays. The result is pretty good. But the humming sometimes comes back while in use. If not, then after being turned off, it will start once everything is switched on again.

Is this a straightforward indication that i need to add a pre amp?

Advice greatly appreciated.

No, the Teac has a built-in phono stage so you don't need another. In any case, I believe you have answered your own query - after wiggling the earth connector the humming goes, but comes baack again - is a sure indication that the connection is loose at some stage (very common for the spades to come loose if it gets pulled by mistake from the connector when moving the TT, done it myself more than once). Check the connections carefully, if necessary you could remove the spade and wrap the bare wire around the earth terminal. If that dfoesn't work then the loose connection could perhaps be at the TT end.

Thank you for your reply.

I will check and see what result i can obtain.

If i can't resolve, i guess i will speak with my nearest hi fi shop regarding a new ground wire.

Best wishes

I have removed the earth spade and put the ground wire direct on to the ground post.

The same is occuring. Having looked at various forum posts, i suspect that i have some ground loop hum.

Can anyone confirm whether or not using the tacima 6 way conditioner would also stop this ( if it is ground loop hum) . Basically, does this bit of kit act as a band stop filter?

I am discounting any fault in the ground wire in posing this question .....

Many thanks
