Hi Steve, You're welcome here to have a listen and couple of pints when the amp arrived from repair. There are no serious issues at all with the AMS apart from power consumption and I dont use a subwoofer.

Soundslike a plan, once you've got it back, and dry January is over!

There is one on ebay, seller mentions the line out thump when connected to a sub.

I'm sorely tempted, it's way undervalued at the moment. There's a second that's only a few months old unused going for £3.5k

This is still remarkably cheap, less than a day to go.

I know I said I wouldn't interfere further, but you should put in a low bid....and if you get it, great.

Believe me, power isn't an issue on the likes of Proac Floorstanders....but heat, power usage and a volume that goes up too quickly, could be.

If this was silver I would put in a bid too, so cheap. I am not looking to upgrade right now but i think that amp would enhance my system.......of course then I would need better speakers ;-)........

Cno, the AMS will be back home on tuesday from JS Audio repair. The problem was the left channel been "blown" if thats the right word for it. And I guess it started with the faulty wall socket and our electric oven keeps trippin' all the power outlets (now sorted). Apart from the repair, John also did some upgrades(at extra costs) of some better quality components which include in the preamp section, caps and internal wirings etc. So can't really wait

Cno.. the AMS has arrived couple of days ago. Well guess what..the improvement is quite noticeable. The main thing that really struck me was the better definition of lower end which is more taut n punchy, super clean highs and mids without harshness or hardness. Soundstage was also improved but maintain its fluidity as if there's another pair of speakers on each side of the room. While typing this ,Im listening to Dave Grusin live and the music just floats in the air and every instrument were clearly presented in a more airy and tuneful way. John from JS Audio repair is truly a gem when it comes to Musical Fidelity.

All I can say is it must now be very good indeed, as it already set the bar very high.....improved bass definition, extra clarity and all without losing its magic, sounds the business.

It does really sound very good indeed. Like a valve amp that can rock with absolute musicality. Never heard this amp as good as ever!

It would be interesting for someone to do a back to back with other class A's e.g. a sugden masterclass, just to see how they compare.

The other thing is, if its so great, and I'm not doubting it is, 1) why did MF stop making it and 2) why havent they reintroduced it since?

The AMS35i is step up from the IA-4 ie. in terms of power, bass slam/depth and is even more glorious in the mid range. I think you need to be looking at the Masterclass pre/power to match it.

I suspect that they stopped making it because people are put off paying so much money for something that is "only" 35W, runs hot enough to fry an egg on and draws so much power from the mains.

IMO. In order to match its performance within Class A, you need to be looking at the top offerings from Luxman, Accuphase, Audio Analogue and Pathos.

Its "replacement" is the Nu-Vista 800, which costs £2k more and has 300W / 8 Ohm and 580W / 4 Ohm.
