The connecting section (called the "C-bridge design") between the ball and the bean-shaped section is actually elastic, made of a high-performance nickel titanium shape memory steel wire.

Nickel titanium alloys, or nitinol, are only nickel and titanium, no iron or carbon is present, so they are not in any sense, steel.
