how many hifi lovers became hooked on hifi after reading a hifi magazine,
it all started with me picking up a magazine in my dentist and reading it
it was called practical hifi, i then started to buy it every month way back in 1980
and have been buying hifi mags ever since anyone else find the hifi press
highly addictive so how did you get hooked on hifi..

Think I've replied to a similar post in the past, but here goes....

I've always been into cars, even from a very early age, and part of that (when you're in your teens/20s anyway) was having nice I.C.E. I started reading some Car Hi-Fi mags, and read 'Max Power' before I could even drive, but they were purile and childish, and left me a bit cold after a few years, in spite, or maybe because of, the ever increasing amount of bare flesh on display. (Whatever happened to Olivia Stringer?)

As I got older, I started to lose interest in I.C.E, and shifted my focus to I.H.E (In Home Entertainment), I started reading WHF in around 2000, before buying my first 'proper' system in '02.

This was further compounded by having my amp, CD changer and subs nicked out of my car a couple of years ago..... I haven't bothered replacing them, I just use the head unit (an Alpine..... Some habits just won't die) and the speakers in each of the doors (JL Audio 5x7s).

I think the only way I'd ever get into I.C.E again was if I was able to buy a nice classic or American car, which would be used solely for pleasure.

I don't mind (damned with faint praise? I don't mean to, I'm very happy.) the switch to home entertainment, we watched 'Knowing' last night (really enjoyed it too, despite the reviews) and the sound when the plane crashes is mind-blowing!! Makes the expense and hassle worth it, 10 fold!!

Used to work on both Audiophile and High Fidelity way back when, and given that getting copy out of most of the contributors was like pulling teeth, and almost all of it took endless polishing, I suspect most of them got switched on to hi-fi with the sound of a drill howling and the odd scream of pain from next door.

Could also explain some of their tastes in music and equipment, too...

It was a combination of things that got me hooked.

For me, the music has always come first. I started playing the piano when I was 6 and I consequently became fascinated with recorded music.

My Dad's hi-fi was one element of what got me hooked. He was running the Sansui amp at that time with a Pioneer PL12D and that really paved the way for my interest. When I was 8 he gave the system to me and I never looked back.

Reading the hi-fi press was the other element. Hi-Fi Answers was always a favourite of mine, as was What Hi-Fi. I remember getting my local newsagent into trouble when I was only about 10 because I placed a monthly order with him for What Hi-Fi. My pocket money wouldn't cover the cost and when Mum and Dad found out they had a big falling out with the newsagent for taking an order from a 10 year old. After that, Dad bought it and I read it until I could afford to start buying my own copy.

Until recently I was buying all the hi-fi mags but I've now reduced it to just WHFS&V and Hi-Fi World - the two best ones as far as I'm concerned.

The rebuilding part was a neccesity just to keep my cars on the road. At 17 I had a 1959 S2 LWB Land Rover (this was in 1992/1993). Man I'd get so annoyed at people telling me how reliable Land Rovers are, I spent virtually every other weekend fixing one thing or another! Not for racing though, this thing was governed to 50MPH!!! (2 1/4 Diesel).

Gave me the confidence to delve into the oliy bits though (which I still do).

One day, I'm gonna have a late '60s American muscle car on the drive....... One day.....

However, I digress. I appologise. Back to topic.

:)
