Best Budget Speakers

Which would be the best pair of budget speakers under pounds 300 to partner with:

1) Marantz PM6003 Amp

2) Yamaha AS300 Amp

3) Rotel RA4 SE

How good are:

Wharfedale Diamond 10.1

Archaydis DM1

Tannoy Mercury V1

Mission MX1

Q Acoustics 2020

Wharfedale Diamond 9.1

Thanks.

One thing I would say is that the Mission MX1s are better overall than the Wharfedale Diamond 10.1. They remain more composed tonally whilst never lacking in excitement or dynamism. They would work well with any of the amps you are looking at.

If you go down the Marantz route I would also be inclined to look at the Monitor Audio BX2.

very true matt, furthermore the MX3's by Mission are very well made and in my opinion king of the budget floor standers. superb unlike the Tannoy Mercury V4 floor standers which are very poorly finished and sound ....... well pants.

Q Acoustics. With the right amplification they sound marvellous.

Edit: i've heard the two Wharfedales, but not extensively. They're Ok. However, you should really audition. What's just all right to some of us is the best thing out there to others.

Thanks. I value your expert advice as it is helping me to narrow down the selection process.

Thanks. I seem to be in good enlightened company. Now chances of my going wrong with the selection are far less than before (I came here on this very useful Forum started by What Hi-Fi).

Hi Steve

FWIW now that the Dali Lektor 2's can be had for £150 they have got to be near the top of the audition list. They are significantly better than the 9.1's. I found they needed much more running in.

it's hard to better the avi neutron v for his money, very high end sound for a very low price.

buy yourself a 2nd hand amp with some power and you are ready to go.

Better is the avi dedicated subwoofer, amp, dac. but then the price will be pushed.

Other then that, dali lektor 2 is a good speaker with the nad 326 amp.

AudioEngine A5s. $350 gets you an amp and speakers. Hook it up a squeezebox touch and you're golden.

Thanks for the suggestion. Have read a lot of praise about AudioEngine A5s. But I had thought they would be excellent for use with a PC. Do you think that they would do an eqaully good job when used for listening to music in a normal sized room?

Define 'normal sized' room. 🙂

I've got the A2s in a fairly large bedroom: has room for a king sized bed with plenty of room for a dressing table a chair etc. and still feels roomy.

The A2s are doing just fine.

Well, how about this: defintely worth an audition. 🙂

Might also prevent you to go down the path of hifi/audiophile madness and save you some time.
