That 'kick drum' in 90s clubs

I wonder about something. I have been into music and production of music, but hardly went into the background of 'post production treatments' of songs in clubs.

Now I remember from times that I visited clubs (before decibel regulations) that the kick drums seemed standarized, as in that they always seem to sound the same. There was the regular punchy 909 kickdrum among other signatures, but it also was like they added something sharper to it in the higher frequencies.

I wonder if it was the effect of overdub or simply the signature of the speakers.

Can't help you with that.
I'm happy to say that the majority of my time in clubs was spent listening to real instruments, either live or recorded (that's not to say that nothing was artificially boosted of course).
