I was in JL about to purchase a TH42PZ85B, when I asked him what he thought of the TV, he advised me that he thought the TH42PZ80B was a better set and cheaper. He advised that the speed of motion on the 80B was twice as fast (100mhz vs 50 mhz) so therefore sports on the 80B would be a better picture. He also stated that the 80B was a newer TV than the 85B, is this correct ? Can anyone help and advise me their comments and the pros and cons of both sets ?, I will mainly be watching SD TV through a Virgin V+ box, and a lot of football, also movies via a Blu-ray player. (also will be planning to purchase a Onkyo receiver and speaker ssystem in the future)

The PZ80 IS newer but it is exactly the same panel as the PZ85.The PZ85 has better sound and IFC but picture quality wise there is no difference.

So speed of picture there is no difference, also do both do 24fps so when watching a blu ray disc, the picture will also be the same ?

They both will run Blu-Ray exactly the same. The 85 has IFC which I believe is meant to smooth out the picture and reduce flicker but there is plenty of debate on whether it actually improves things. Most owners seem to prefer IFC off.

They are both the latest 2008 models. PZ85 came out a few of weeks earlier, that's all. They both are 100Hz, although if you use IFC, 100Hz is disabled on the 85 .

I think the salesman is right, in that it's the better model, because the extras are maybe not worth the extra money?

OK, I will see if they will match the Sound & Vision price of the PZ80. As long as I will no be losing anything in picture quality I will go for the cheaper option, although the cost is not my main priority. (Picture and quality first)

Sorry to dig this up again.

I'm in the market for a new telly and was looking at the TH42PZ85B, but after reading this post and this review, I'm now in two minds over whether I should save some money and get the TH42PZ80B.

Is IFC really worth the extra money? A lot of people here seem to be saying that they never use it. Does it really not improve things when watching a 24fps blue-ray source?

And is there anything else which should affect my decision? I know it has better sound, but I have an AV receiver and 5.1 speaker set-up already.

Thanks.

I've posted this link elsewhere but I'll post it again

This LINK leads to a twoway comparison between the PZ 80 and the PZ 85.IFC is generally regarded by those in the know as being useless so I don't think the extra cost is worth paying but you can find very thoroh rviews of both sets HERE . I hope that helps.

Thanks. There's no mention in that review about the digital optical output the PZ85 has (and which the PZ80 lacks). Is there any advantage to having this?

Sound outputs man nothing to me as I lost my hearing aa while back. At a guess I'd say it just depends on how you want to hook the TV up to your AV reciever. Then again I could be wrong....

I have the PZ85 and would recommend going for it. IFC works on blu ray and smoothes out panning shots but does give a slightly video type effect. I tend to turn it on and off depending on film, mood etc. Nice to have the option though. Do not buy the PZ85 for this reason alone though.

I have hooked the TV up to my AV receiver using the optical digital out. This gives 5.1 sound if broadcast (mainly on adverts) but also gives you surround sound if you connect a sourcr to the TV via HDMI. It is well worth the additional flexibility IMO, particularly as you stated cost was not your main concern.

Again, in my opinion, the styling of the 85 is better.

Thanks, it sounds like it's probably worth the extra then.

The 85 has upgraded audio as well, and has a virtual surround setting called "BBE VIVA". This sounds as good as stereo but with improved surround soundiness. Absoultely miles better than the basic "simulated surround" which tends to make vocals sound mushy and unclear.

I've tried all 3 sound modes on my 42PZ85 and find the BBE VIVA to be the best option. It's pretty impressive by lcd/plasma standards.

I do have a proper surround setup for movies, but as I normally watch basic tv (sky) using the tv speakers I find the extra few £'s to be worth the cash.

Well, i have PY85 for 3 weeks (eastern european version od PZ85), and I adore IFC. It works almost perfectly; even with SD signal. In those 3 weeks, I noticed only few problems: when watching footbal ball sometimes stutter (only with high altitude kicks, when ball is in front of public), and few times with movies. But, its really neglectible: I watched croatia - austria through IPTV in FullHD, and it looks bloody marvelous. Far better than expected, though (FullHD IPTV is new in my country).

Since I often review TVs for Croatian IT-multimedia magazine, I tested or at least saw most of the TVs available. And ICF handles motion stuttering as one of the best, with minimal noise and artifacts introduction. I really dont understand how anybody would like to turn it off?

Sound is quite good on PY85, but I dont care for that, since I use Cambridge Audio 840A+KEF IQ7 speakers...

Best regards...
