I recently set the volume levels in my Panny PX80B so that they were the same for the TV and for DVDs and bluray disks (through the "HDMI1" setting). After playing a few DVDs it seemed i had succeeded, as i no longer had to scramble to turn the volume down several steps when going from a DVD to the TV.

However, last night i thought id try my new Blurays just to see if i hadnt bought the wrong region or something and...nada. Well, sound wise anyway. After a brief panick i just turned the volume up. Simple. But i had to turn it up a lot again.

This isnt an enormous problem but thought id throw it open to the floor just in case im missing anything.

The lossless formats on Bluray are quieter than the DD and DTS soundtracks on DVD, but this doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things - you just need to turn them up more :)

Speaking of which - and this is where i really show my ignorance - might it be that it is defaulting to a fancier format even tho i dont have an amp and speakers to make use of them? It cant do that can it? And its still quiet.

Some discs use the lossless soundtrack and downmix it to produce lesser sound formats, so it will still come across as a little quiet. Different discs will default to differnt formats, so it's worth checking when you load up each disc.

Sorry, had to make time to have a fiddle with them.

They could make the display clearer. sometimes when i was flicking through the sound formats i was getting descriptions for blind people, and there seemed to be formats for other countries, i got quite confused. eventually i settled on whatever it defaulted to as none of the others sounded better, some were worse imo. This is all in the menus from the BDP, and not the settings from within the disc itslef, as far as i could tell. But as i say i didnt really understand the abbreviations of the formats sometimes. Well, ever, really.

But i found a dialogue booster which had a subtle but real effect, and i liked one of the BD35s virtual surround settings, so im using them to improve thngs now.
