This just in from Richard at GenServe, which handles Onkyo servicing:
"We'd suggest to the customer that he ensures that Anynet + (Samsung's HDMI / CEC control protocol) is switched off via the tools menu on his TV. These manufacturer-specific protocols can cause problems.
"If it's already off, we'd suggest enabling it and then telling it to go through the HDMI source component search routine and seeing if that makes any difference.
"He doesn't mention anything else connected to the amp; we'd ask what the other HDMI-connected components are and see if there's something like a Sky HD box or media PC which are regular sources of HDMI signal drop-out (HDCP handshake problems).
"We'd then probably suggest he disconnects all the input source components connected via HDMI and then re-connect one at a time to see if the culprit becomes evident.
"He also doesn't mention cable lengths; his plasma is probably wall-mounted so the HDMI cable may be quite long; it is possible that the HDMI output signal strength is not as high as from the older amp. We'd suggest using a short HDMI cable either to the same TV or if not possible then to another HDMI TV to see if the problem persists.
"We'd also suggest if possible connecting another HDMI TV to the same cable he's using for the plasma; these 2 tests help to show whether there may be a problem with the cable or compatibility with the plasma.
"After all that, we'd suggest he does the firmware update on-line, giving us a call if there's a problem."
