Having just purchased some new speakers, I had a couple spare to finally set up some surround-back channels. While watching The Mummy Returns on DTS HD Master, I realised that the back channels were completely silent, which made sense as it's only a 5.1 audio track. Theoretically, I could change the sound to a Neo 6 or something, but this would destroy the soundtrack, wouldn't it? So does this mean that having surround-back speakers is a waste of time unless you hunt out films with a DTS ES soundtrack?

...so a waste of time then... or maybe I'll wait till the film companies release a Special Ultimate Platinum edition of my favourite film so I can buy it and experience the extra channel of wind noise....

I have an onkyo amp which lets you apply pro-logic or neo processing to the digital audio and creates the rear channel effects.

You dont need to have a 7.1 channel bluray etc in order for the back channel to work mate.

On your amp you may have (mine does) a function were you can specifically turn the surround back channels on, like on my amp if i switch the surround back channels to "on" it means that they will stay on all the time, however if i turn them off then they will only be used when a 6.1 or 7.1 flags up, i find its best to leave em on all the time.

Anyway see if you have this function ye? & are you using 1 or 2 back speakers?

Also to add to this have you made sure your surround back channel levels are turned up?

Hi Jase! I'll check this when I get home. I assumed they were on as I did the Audessey set up and they were working fine. Also, they were on when I played a CD, but you never know. If there's a function that turns them on all the time then I'll find it!

I use PLIIx, which brings the surround back speakers into play and creates more ambience with a 5.1 source. ÿIt's a matter of taste and some folk prefer to play the soundtrack in its native form. ÿI believe that the receiver sends signals to the rear that occur simultaneously in the surround channels - seems logical to me, anyway. ÿDTS Master in 7.1 is when you really appreciate the extra speakers, but there aren't many films like that, sadly.

Different amps work in different ways.

Good luck with it anyway.
