I've always used surge protection on all my electrical stuff - not had a problem so far but then it just makes sense really rather than having to go through the hassle of replacing a load of stuff through the house insurance if I do get an issue.

A sensible precaution, why not try a Tacima CS929 Conditioner
6 Way Mains Conditioner and Filter?
(What Hi-Fi 5 Stars). I bought one off E Bay for £25 last month and it made a big difference to the sound quality as well.
Having circuit breakers in the fuse box adds to safety as they respond quicker to surge. Don't think anything can help much though if lightning strikes the house!

and when it does, anything plugged in will fry. and if your crt tv is on at the time and you happen to be bent down in front of it pressing eject on your dvd player when lightening hits the aerial, you'll jump so much you leave teeth marks in the ceiling.
