hi just bought a rega planner 3 with the supex smm 5 cartidge does anyone have any information about the catridge correct tracking weight etc and is it worth getting a new stylus for it when the time comes or get a new cartridge thank you anthony

ps it as a rega rb300 arm

I would replace the stylus as a matter of course - you can't tell if the stylus is damaged until it's wrecked a record.

Musonic seem to have them in stock for around £40 which isn't bad, and views on other forums say it compares favourably to modern £70 carts.

Your cartridge is a Supex SM100 Mk II or MK III ( probably.

Your SMM/5 was just one of the styli available. (0.5mil spherical diamond.)

There was also an elliptical (0.3 x 0.8mil) SMM/38E and others as you can see from the picture.

Tracking weight of 1.5 - 2.5 grammes.

I am assuming your Planar 3 is the pre 1983 model with the Acos Lustre derived ('S' shaped) Rega R200 arm.

A version of this cartridge was also made for Rega back in the 80's in modded form called an R100. We sold loads of them. A modern equivalent would more than likely be the Ortofon 2M Blue. This is mechanically compatible with your RB300 arm and will sound very good.
