So I went to my closest friendly dealer and had a chat.

He had the Dynavector 10X5 and we discussed that — and then we got on to the kind of music I listened to.

In the same price bracket he said the Sumiko would suit my taste and I shouldn't be disappointed.

So that's what I have now sitting next to me on my desk at work.

My chance to return it unused today if anyone tells me it's bonkers…

Well its not a duffer ,lol. However its , for me anyways , very bright. Spose as you are running a Red it wont offend your lugs if that computes ?. This is the thing about that ruddy three point fixing on your tonearm that bugs me no end for you Rega guys. Yip I know you can get shims but they are fixed height 1mm 2mm blah blah blah , limiting your tweaking options no end. The point I'm getting at is you can tame the treble on the Sumi with some *fine adjustment* , with patience, by setting it up a**e end down. You wont eradicate it totaly as its a lively cart anyways but as I say you can tame it a bit. But if you go too far it will just sound meh !.

Anyhoo as I say it aint a duffer and you may well love it. Have fun buddy. :).

Walrus ?.

Hmmmm — this is the whole synergy thing.

I imagine in my head that the Rega is quite musical and punchy anyway - so it might end up over the top

I would James as up to a point you are changing like for like. That notmuchfun red aint slow in coming forward at the best of times really.

What steered you to the sumi then ?.

Well to be fair I do quite like the red — it's pretty forward and lively. Compared to the Elys2 on the RP3 I had for a while before sending it back it was a lot more enjoyable — I found the Elys2 really smooth and detailed but perhaps a little dull.

I think though I want something a little more refined but with the same kind of tempo. I'm pretty sure I'll get that having read numerous descriptions of the Dynavector.

Didn't really answer your question.

We discussed my musical taste — and it felt like the right thing.

No issues at all and I think great service — but now I'm kind of going back to my gut feeling and I don't want to be left with something that's tiring to listen to.

Wheres Steviebaby when you need him. The little dyna can boogie allright and tons more refined than the Sumi.

As you two have pretty much the same set up his input may help you along James.

Obvously I cant compare the Sumiko as I havent heard it, The 10x5 to my ears is so much nicer sounding than the Exact - more open & transparent - it not tiring either.

James you have the luxury of trying both, I havent where as Keith lent me the 10x5 so I am going with it (When Analogue Seduction get a delivery - this week i hope)

When I was looking for cartridges, the amount of times I was recomended the 10x5 as a match made in heaven with the Rega . . . I then had the oportunity to listen to Sumiko in my own P5, bright, modern presentation by my standards, not my cup of tea. A personal opinion of course.
