Hi

Im thinking of upgrading my Sony s360 and looking for suggestions, Ive noticed the Pioneer lx-52 is now priced at £250 but is it much better? or are there much options around?

Im not using av setup rather music amp with 2 floorspeakers which works really well for me.

Ideally Im seeking a bluray player who's picture and sound output is a noticeable upgrade to the s360.

Insights/suggestions welcome

Right now i would wait like myself....new models are just weeks or months away (for example the new Sony bluray range is the 380,480, 580 and 780) and from there you can make a better choice as to what to buy. I'm not just waiting for the latest machines either as when these new ranges are announced the prices on current ranges tumble very quickly meaning that some real bargains should be out there! The lx-52 is a great player at a good price though but for me i would wait a little longer and see what the new ranges introduce but if you can't wait then go for it as i doubt it will disappoint.

I would like to upgrade my Sony bdp760 and am currently in the same situation but i'm definately waiting as i'm in no hurry.

Hope that helps some

Yes it does make sense ta. I nearly brought the s760 insteadof the s360 but was assured the difference wasnt great.

Im not interested in 3D screens or players. Ive got a Panasonic 42G20 plasma hooked up to Sky+ and the Sony s360. Music from a hifi amp rather than av amp plus floor speakers.

My best recent upgrade was changing the Chord carnival speaker cable to Chord Epic, the difference in sound is really a 'wow' moment, so this got me thinking on upgrading the Bluray players.

Thanks for the advice again when the new models are launched please keep me posted, currently it seems the Pioneer and Sony seem to be best thought of so far.

Im in the same situation to with my sony760, which purchased last year but I think musically I could do better, by the way what settings in the blu ray suit your setup, by keen on some feed back, thanks.

A Blu-ray player upgrade is probably next in my search for home cinema nirvana, but I'm going to hang fire to see what emerges as a class leader in 2011. However, other review sites claim Sony's S-370 is a better choice than the newer S-380.

I can understand the logic in grabbbing an older model bargain. I'd audition the Pioneer player you mention to determine whether it offers a big enough improvement over your S-360 to represent good value.

Well i hate to disagree BUT the 760 carried tech over from the top of the range sony player of the time and was a MAJOR overhaul when compared to the 360! Read the WHF review for the full heads up but at the time the s760 completely changed the ball park with regards to bluray performance at an affordable price and has shaped the players we see today...whoever gave you that advice couldn't have been more wrong if they tried i'm afraid, across the board the 760 is superior.

VERY JEALOUS with your new speaker cable...great choice! I remember when i got my QED silver anniversary XD cable and the night and day feeling i got then and it sounds like you have had exactly that but it does surprise me that you have noticed such a difference as you hardly had rubbish cable to start with...hmmm got me thinking about doing the same now lol!

Will try to update regarding the new BD ranges but WHF will get there before most so you are better off keeping an eye on the site for announcements and of course the mag, i beleive the new Sony players are up for review soon so the rest must surely follow soon after, hope that helps sheehanjuk

By settings are you refering to the players various video and audio settings? There are 2 menus though so are you referring to the home menu settings or the menu available when you play a disc? To give you an idea of how mine is set up here is how i use the menu options when a disc is being played (via the option button on the remote) Video settings - Standard PQM, HD reality enhancer - Enhance 0, smoothing Standard, FGR 0 these are for HD and when watching dvd i will sometimes add some enhance but that's it. Audio settings - AV sync 0, Audio Filter Sharp. These never change as i have no idea what the audio filter does and changing it to slow has no effect in my system.

Hope that helps but if you want more info just let me know

I have the Sony BDP-S370, and while I find it really impressive with DVDs, I feel with Blu-rays it is what it is i.e. a budget deck. I don't get that perception of image-depth that the WHF review mentions. Don't get me wrong, it plays Blu-rays really well and with little picture noise, but there's no wow factor.

I think a real step-up would be a midrange Pioneer and up like the S-320 or better. Or a Sony 760 (I also don't believe a 370 is as good) or perhaps the new 780.

Mmm well i listened on what the guy said on the 760 this time I will do some research. Ideally Im seeking a Bluray player with a noticeable upgrade to my s360, which model it turns out to be is well.. exciting!

Yes speaker cable.. the difference between the 2 Chord cables was..errr.. EPIC.. excuse the pun, a really good investment, the improvement 'truely excellent' even the Mrs noticed! Im def happy happy with the Chord Epic speaker cables.

Yup will keep my eyes peeled for latest reviews but I find WHF abit 'washy' on reviews eg which players have the best picture or which has the best sound, Id prefer a number score on PQ and SQ personally. I dont give a dam on 3D function, streaming online content or browser, I just want excellent PQ and SQ

I would suggest the Cambridge Audio 650 BD with CDs played via the analogue outs would give you the increase in sound quality you are looking for.

I heard the Cambridge PQ wasnt exciting.

Does anyone have a Pioneer? Maybe the LX-52 so to compare and review, my internet research points to Pioneer bluray players, when is the new range launched? does anyone know??

I suggested the CA player as you are using a 2 channel amp and therefore require the best SQ via analogue for around your budget. I've seen this player in the flesh and it certainly competes PQ wise with the BDPS370. Alternatively a little extra would get you an Oppo 93 but I have not seen/heard it in the flesh. IMO the newer pioneers (lower down the range) aren't the best around, they seem to have a lot of disc playing issues and are actually made by Sharp. I think the 52 was the last of the pioneer made units, and has pretty slow load times.

After reading 'so many reviews' it seems a big improvement to PQ and SQ would be the Panasonic DMP-BD85, so does anyone know when this years Panasonic 2D flagship model is out??
