Subwoofer question

I have a REL Strata 5 sub that has a High level Neutrik connection to connect to your amp's speaker binding posts.
And it also has a single RCA Low level connection for connection from the LFE output on a surround amp.

My question is:

I want to connect the sub directly to a stereo pre amp.
So will have to feed the sub with a stereo L&R pair of interconnects from the pre outs on the pre amp.

Is there any way to implement this into the REL's connections?

Thanks

Matt

Do you mean running from two phonos to a Neutrik?

Hi David

Yes, i did consider that as an option but wondered if the output from the pre out's would be enough to drive the hi level input of the neutrik?

Cheers

Matt

I can't see why not, but seeing as the Neutrik cable has 3 cores, I can only assume you'd need to wire one up yourself with 4 core cable - not something I've ever done, so might be worth directly asking REL the question, as I would've thought they'll be able to say yay or nay as to whether it's possible.

Hi David and AlmaataKZ

I sent Rel an email asking the question a few days ago, but no reply yet.

Ive made a DIY Rel Neutrik cable before using some heavy gauge ofc cable, so i have a Neutrik connector i bought for that.

The Neutrik connector contains a Left +&-, and a Right +&-
As you know, from the supplied REL cable, you only need the left & right positive and one negative as it is a 3 core cable.

So i think that running a pair of interconnects from the pre, into female RCA connectors that have their +&- bare wire's at the end, connect the 2 positive wire's into their places in the Neutrik connector but only 1 of the negative cables in the same fassion as the REL cable.

My only concern would be the voltage difference, if any, between the output from the pre out's and the output from an amplifiers speaker binding posts.

Lets hope REL get back to me

Wouldn't a Y RCA connector (2 into 1) be easier, into the REL's single RCA socket. My current subs have L and R RCA connectors but I connected up a previous sub this way and it worked fine.

I did consider this option, but would be concerned that combining the L&R RCA outputs from the pre into one using the 'Y' adaptor could cause a dead short between the L&R positive's?

Why don't you just connect your sub to your amps speaker posts using the correct cable?

I don't understand the advantage of connecting to your pre-amp in this way, or may be I have just got the wrong end of the stick!

Sorry, i didnt really explain at the start.
The idea of this is so i can use the sub in an Active setup directly from the pre amp because i will no longer have an integrated or power amp with speaker binding posts.

Cheers
Matt
