Folks,

My sub as per my signature died a slow horrible death tonight. Loud crackling followed by that distinctive smell of burning components then the main breaker for the house tripped.

Ive checked the fuses on the sub and one has blown I replaced this and no difference, the replacement never blew. I tried another power cable still no joy, so I think it's beyond repair. I checked the warranty and it's only for a year and the sub is just over 2 years old.

So my question is what should I replace it with? I'm willing to go up to £1000. 2 obvious candidates are Monior Audio RXW12 and a bk elec XXLS400. Down firing is preferred as I have a dog but he's never shown any interest in chewing any of my AV gear so I'm not gong to rule out front firing. Auditioning in Aberdeen isn't readily available so I'll be buying based on reviews/advice from your good selves.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I'd stick to sealed subs seeing as that's what you're used to, unless you want to explore ultimate depth subs.

the RXW12 will be quite a step above the R370HD, and will give you greater punch with some extra depth, and be able to take more punishment too, so if your sub died because of over exertion, the RXW12 will have far more headroom fr you to play with.

You could look at the SVS SB12 too. This uses a heavy duty metal grille, so should your dog show a sudden interest, he can try all he likes! Is is only slightly bigger than the RXW12 too. This comes with a 5 year warranty.

My Rel when it died was abt 10 years old and it cost me 50 quid to get it repaired via Sevenoaks + two 5 quid taxi rides to drop it off and pick it up.

I would speak to Monitor Audio / my dealer first. According to Sale of Goods Act, it isn't unreasonable to expect a subwoofer to last longer, regardless of the warranty period.
