First post here...

I have a home studio setup with some Focal Trios, and a Universal Audio soundcard, connected to desktop pc that stays on constantly (life in the tropics and high humidity). Im looking for a solution to stream audio from an android phone via this setup at decent quality.

I know there are hardware options such as chromecast and Wiim pro etc, but surely if the desktop is connected via my wifi network, there must be software options available that can facilitate this? I'm a noob when it comes to streaming protocols - my confusion lies within the concept that it seems to me you are just sending ones and zeros for a DAC (in this case the Universal Audio Apollo) to decipher - and Im scratching my head as to why a hardware unit within this chain should make a difference here?

Any help much appreciated!

Both windows & Mac allow you to connect your phone to the PC, (Although Mac tries to make it as hard as possible unless you have an iPhone) you just have to allow sharing on your phone so that the PC media player can see it. (And vice Verser)
As you will be at your PC, the best way is to just connect your phone via USB and don't worry about the network.
In addition, all the streaming apps are available on the PC, so you could just install the ones you need, and don't bother with the phone.

Cheers for the response Bill.

I probably should elaborate a bit further on my setup and reasoning for wanting to utilise my phone in a wireless capacity.

I have around 300gig of audio in high quality stored on my phone. My intention is to utilise the multiple outputs on my soundcard to connect both my Focals and a set of outdoor speakers simultaneously, while being able to control playlists and volume from my phone.

Im just confused as to why a software solution could not facilitate this.

No experience of either but look at Soundwire or Hifi Cast.
Remote Mouse might be worth looking at. It (apparently) can act as a remote for you PC. Again not something I have tried.

Thanks, will have a suss. I've spent over $25k in studio gear, and the thought of wasting money on another DAC/streamer isnt appealing. Pretty happy with the conversion on the Apollo

This may help https://www.airdroid.com/screen-mirror/stream-audio-from-android-to-pc/ there are also free apps out there to do the same, just do a quick google search to see what suits.

Thanks again, really helpful responses.

Soundwire seems to facilitate the functionality I'm after - but I'm still confused if it attempts to send audio from the phone via wifi - or if the digital to audio conversion is left to my soundcard?

If anyone here has experience with Soundwire I'd love to hear your thoughts

The answer is likely UPnP/DLNA.
This is a open standard for streaming audio.
Windows Media Sharing is DLNA certified.
Programs like BubbleUPnP are popular on Android .
The information in this link is pretty dated but looks like to meet your requirements.

Thanks for the pointer to this Vincent..

I already had Media Monkey app on my phone and didnt realise its server capability - being that Windows has DLNA capability I should be able to get the functionality Im looking for with this setup.

Will post results / review here once I've given it a go

Thankyou to everyone that has replied so far!
