Streaming from a PC

Hi all, Just wanted to check something with the brains on the forum. I should be able to stream anything (music, films, photos) stored on my PC to another DLNA enabled device provided both are connected to my network right? So if I have my PC plugged into my router and a DLNA enabled TV upstairs I should be able to browse the files on the TV and playback any I select? Is there any software for my PC that I'll need in order to access the files on my TV? I'm considering building my own HTPC and want to make sure I can do this before starting. The idea being that the PC can act as a NAS, streaming files to other things on the network. Thanks,

Well, you'll need DLNA media server software running on the PC to make the content visible to the DLNA devices. The good news is that there are lots of DLNA/UPnP server packages available free; the bad news is almost everyone seems to have a favourite and will tell you quite forcefully that all the others are rubbish! :doh:

A spot of Googling will bring up all kinds of reviews and opinions – can't really advise you myself as I have a pathological loathing of most things Windows, but that's just me 😉

However, I am sure others will jump in with their own favourites and suggestions.

you'll just need to make sure that you have a DNLA server running on the computer you are wanting to stream from.

The latest Windows Media Player 12 is also a DLNA Server, so you just have to turn it on, (There is no need to get any 3rd party DLNA Server software) just open the help file in WMP12 and type in DLNA to get full instructions.

In addition if you download the free codec packs for your OS (Just Google Widows? Codec Pack) and WMP will be able to play and transcode any Video/Audio file format out there.

NOTE: Most TV Manufactures tell you how to set up WMP 12 to work as a DLNA server with their products, so just go to your TV manufactures support section on their website.

I would also consider using a Linux install if you want the Pc setup as a media server.

Before I had my NAS, I used http://www.mediamonkey.com/ : very simple to use.

Windows mediaplayer works also, put for me it is too slow (much slower than mediamonkey).

Twonky is decent and streams music, video and photos to your devices. I'm currently using Asset UPnP but that is just for audio.
