I am hooking my pc to my receiver (well trying to). I have a dvi to hdmi cable but need to free up the TV/SAT hdmi slot in the receiver. I have therefore bought some component cables to go from Sky HD to receiver. I've actually been told that the picture is even better on Sky HD using component over HDMI - another story. I linked this all up last night but the receiver doesn't like it! Anyone got any pointers please?

The Sony doesn't do video upconversion from component to HDMI, so you won't get a video output from the receiver's HDMI out socket from any source connected to the receiver's component input. It's probably best to connect component straight from the Sky box to the TV.

Thanks for that Andrew. I have another issue. I want to connect my pc to my tv or even better, receiver. Now my graphics card can only be sent out up to component. So I know I need a DVI to component cable. My question is, could I have my LCD connected to the receiver by component and then hdmi from receiver to Sky HD, hdmi from receiver to DVD and component from PC to receiver?? Would I lose any quality this way? Many thanks in advance.

No can do as the receiver can't downconvert from HDMI to component. So you'd need both HDMI and component connections to the TV.

And you'll need to check whether your PC can output analogue component via DVI, or just digital, before that DVO-component cable will work, too.

As component doesn't carry any audio, your best bet, depending on the connections on your TV, is to do:
  • HDMI for picture and optical digital for audio from Sky HD to receiver
  • HDMI for picture and optical/electrical digital from DVD to receiver.
  • DVI for video and either digital or analogue (depending on your soundcard's outputs) for audio from PC to receiver.
  • Component and HDMI from receiver to TV.
Or, if your TV has at least two HDMIs and component video input, connect the Sky HD and DVD video direct to the TV via HDMI, and the computer video direct to the TV via component, with the audio connections as above.
