I've got my 2400es hooked up to ps3 with HDMI and am confused as to what the amp is displaying. My speaker setting is 3/2.1, and ps3 is set to linear pcm.

Please could someone help me with the following questions.

When playing Blurays and DVDS on AFD AUTO the amp only uses L+R and sub, even though the BD/ DVD is 5.1. I thought the amp should pass through the sound as it was recorded ie. 5.1. Is this correct?

Also, when I use the DCS options the speaker pattern display shows L+R +C and SUB, but there is just one unboxed S for the surround L +R. According to the manual it means either the sound is mono, or processing is taking place. Should this happen when playing BDs and DVDs? Does everyone else get this aswell?

What setting should I use when watching BDs through the ps3. Esurround shows all speakers working, but I thought that was supposed to be used to change 2 channel to 5.1?

Hi,

My understanding is the AFD Auto mode should let you hear all six channels, or whatever the amp receives from the PS3, with minimal additional processing. Have you checked that you've got the 5.1 track selected from the disc's menu? It might also be worth running the Sound Settings again on the PS3. Select HDMI then Automatic and it'll have a chat with (swap EDID data with) the amp to figure out what audio codecs / bitrates are supported.

Thanks for the reply beaverme.

Yeah that was my understanding of AFD AUTO aswell.

I always set the dvd to output 5.1 so it shouldn't be that, but I will have a play around with the sound settings on the ps3.

You could also double check that you've got your rear speakers connected to the surround left / right outputs and not surround back left / right.

Thanks, I will check that also when I get a chance. I don't think that is the case though as I have the surround back left/right connected to the fronts as part of a bi-amp connection for my Q acoustics1030i fronts. I would have thought the auto calabration would have picked that one up on the initial set up, but there were no error messages.

Sounds like your problem is elsewhere then as you'd definitely have picked it up during calibration.

Hi beaverme,

Guess what, I did what you said about the PS3 sound settings, I selected the manual option and only 2 channel options were checked. I flicked it back to auto and it is now outputing all channels on AFD auto, furthermore the blue light now comes on, which it has never done before! Also, all channels are now showing up on the DCS display when I select movie mode.

I did a soundcheck with Stealth on Bluray, which I have been using as a benchmark when I play around with the settings, and the difference now is night and day. Loads more bass from the sub, and proper around the room surround effects.

Problem 100% solved. Thank you very much for liberating my system!
