Being inspired by What HiFi's recommendation I am considering buying a Naim Uniti system. In their same awards ATC SCM11 speakers are highly recommended too. However one caveat was in making sure you have gear powerful enough to drive them.......is the Uniti up to the job??

As I said in another thread recently, I'd go for either PMCs - DB1i or GB1i, depending on room size -, or Neat Motive series. On a tighter budget, maybe EB Acoustics EB1s, Quad 11L2s or Mordaunt-Short Mezzo 2s.

Concur with Andrew: Also Epos M12s could come into the equation too.

I can concur about the EB1's, and prior to those a pair of Quad 12L2's. Both driven with ease.

I've also demoed Quad 22l2's, Epos M22i's and PMC DB1's with a Uniti and they all sounded great to my cloth ears.

There are many small bookshelf speakers out there under £1k that will work well with the Uniti. Other than those already mentioned, there are also models from the likes of ProAc, Spendor, Neat, KEF, and Monitor Audio. As long as the speakers you try are of an average sensitivity, and not an awkward load, they'll work fine - it's just a matter of personal taste as to which one you prefer the sound of with the system and your styles of music.

hi p.a.seed@btopenworld.com

The SCM11's will be fine with the Naim Uniti as long as you keep the volume level in check. Dynaudio's DM 2/6, DM 2/7 and Excite X12 speakers work also well with the Uniti.

Thanks

Hope you intend to audition Uniti before you buy one or you trust to "five stars" so much?

Try it with Neat Motive and Momentum range then buy one if you like it.

PMCs are hard to drive.

Never heard ATC SCM11, can't discuss about them...

Good luck!

A pair of XTZ 99.25s might be worth a quick scan - just had a fine review in another UK title and a couple of European mags gave them good reviews too. Around £650 I think. Lovely finish to them too. Only one UK dealer I think though.

im running in some atc sc 11s at the moment and they sound great so audition them and try mark at audio emotion in scotland for a great deal

If you are thinking of the SCM11's, audition with care. We find that the Nait 5i can't control the lower bass of the SCM11's (where the Nait XS can), so it doesn't get the best from them. The Uniti, being based on the 5i, has the same issue. ATC's need a lot of current, and grip, for them to perform as they should do.

andrew can i partner naim uniti with jamo 809/807 or monitor audio rx6.

andrew do you think unitis 50w power is enough to drive the jamo 809 or monitor audio rx6.also are these speakers likely to match the uniti tonaly.

I have no experience with the Jamos, but I would think the Uniti will be powerful enough to drive them. As I said above, the PMC GB1s make a particularly good match if you want floorstanders, as do the Neat Motive 2s.

will try to demo jamo809 and the pmc.was trying to shortlist speakers for demo

On several occassions participants mentioned a possibility of upgrading Naim Unity, either by bi-amping and/or adding Naim power supplies. As Naim is now locally slightly more expensive than in UK (as well as Spendor, Proac, PMC and Neat) and meets most of my requirements:

What would be the max upgrade level on the Unity for gains to make sense, financially and in terms of audible sonic improvement (i.e. instead of buying separates for similar amount)? Taking into account some benefit from a one-box, no-cables solution ......

What speakers should be used then, the ones listed in this thread or models higher up the line (so, not PMC GB1i, but FB1i; not A5, but A6 etc.).

My speakers are still AE 109 (should suit Naim for some time), and Unity would leave me enough upgrade options later on.

Naim + Spendor/Proac are available in one shop locally, Naim + Spendor/Neat in another one close to my home, PMCs are in a different shop, difficult, but not impossible to audition with Naim. I could audition Naim with AE109 in the shop (and probably at home).

Thxs. for your suggestions,

postup
