Hello All,

So, I'm looking (with increasing enthusiasm) at upgrading my speakers. At present, I'm playing my Marantz through a pair of Q Acoustics 2020is - good fun, but not really the last word in refinement. Back when the Marantz came out, Andrew Everard said he'd go as far as to hook it up to a pair of PMC GB1s (£1500, at the time). Anyway, the three contenders for an audition are all 2015 award winners:

B&W 685 S2

Tannoy Revolution XT 6F

ATC SCM11

Considering I already own a reasonable pair of stands, are the Tannoys going to give me double the performance for double the money over the B&Ws? Will the ATCs blow the other two options out of the water? Are any of the above going to shine considering the source?

Obviously, I wouldn't buy any speaker without listening to them first (easier said than done with two out of the three, but anyway), but I'd appreciate any comments.

Cheers,

Daveyjay.

The ATCs would be bordering on cruelty/insanity :) (I speak as an ex-owner and fan of the M-CR603.)

I am not sure what would blow first, speakers or '603.

I don't know about the others.

Try and stick with easy to drive speakers around 90dB (@ 1 metre for 1 Watt @ 8 Ohms) efficiency that don't have any nasty impedance characteristics. (Like plunging below 4 Ohms suddenly in the middle of the bass region!)

I haven't seen anything official but I've heard the Precisions are being discontinued. They may be worth a look - a firm called Audio Express (don't know them) are advertising Precision 6.2s for £799. I have a set, and I love them, and they should be a step up for the Revs at a lower price.

This looks like a stonkingly good deal. Five stars from WHF back in 2013 at 1700 quid. Wondering where the catch is (?). Have things moved on that much? The Limited Edition version are only £100 quid more...

Things haven't moved on that much. I have a pair of the latest Monitor Audio Gold 300s and while the Tannoys lag behind them slightly at the bottom end as a result of being smaller, the Tannoys run them pretty damn close. And let's face it, the other speakers you were considering we're stand mounters which would be even leaner on bass.

Despite my earlier comment about never buying speakers without listening to them first, have any of you done just that? Sometimes it's neigh on impossible to audition the kit one is interested in.
