Once again I would really like to thank everyone for there time and comments.

This is the latest. I had re-tested the amp and speakers and I will try to explain in more depth the result. My room is approx 14 x 14 Feet square. The speakers are in two corners approx 3 feet away from the wall. I have wooden floors with a large rug laid down which takes up 3/4 of the floor space infront of the speakers. To listen to the music I postioned myself about 10-14 feet away.

I used the following tracks as a demo... Lily Allen The Fear. The Eagles Hotel California. U2 Magnificant. Dandy Warhols Bohemian like you. The Killers Human. Elton John Rocket Man.

On 25% volume its ok, all tracks sound good. Tone midrange and bass are nice.

On 45% again volume all is ok. Tone and bass and midrange are ok nice.

On 50% volume The bright high sounding piercing starts to come through.

On 60% The high pitch piercing tone gives me a headache.

I have been into Hi Fi for about 2 years. My first system was a rotel 04 and BR5's with Qed Silver Anniversary XT. Brillant. No probs. Loved the set up. I moved all that gear upstairs into my office. It still sounds great. Bought the Mezzo's and the Kandy 2, and boy did I open a can of worms.

I studied long and hard about what speakers and amp to get. All the reviews state that the Mezzo 6's and The Roksan Kandy 2 Amp are the best under a grand.

I also read about careful matching and bright systems, but it is not until you have one that it hits home. As I said it really sucks. I really am at a loss what to do. The Amp is the heart of any sound system, the speakers are the body. One of them will have to be changed i guess, but which one???

The Kandy 2 is so highly rated by most mags and demos and ive rarely seen it associated with brightness

Personally if you decide to change one i would go for some different speakers but i still think trying different speaker cable first such as chord silver screen may help

From your description of experimentation, above, it could be that you're simply asking too much of the amplifier. Few amps enjoy being pushed beyond the half-way mark (whatever the manufacturers would have you believe). I suggest finding more efficient speakers, a more powerful amp or learning to enjoy music at a lower volume.

cheers

What a saga!!! I do not think the Rotel 04 is a fair test as you
can adjust the treble and bass. However I am going to take my Roksan
Kandy and Dac to Canterbury Hi Fi on Monday and do a test on two
speakers there, Monitor Audio RS8 and a B&W 704.
I will try and sort this nightmare out once and for all.

Asuming they can; I've yet to choose speaker cables for my new Musical Fidelity A3.5 amp and Monitor Audio GS10 speakers (I had to confirm the length befoe buying), I'll need two by 6 m. Good quality single wire, inc a bit to replace the linking plates.

Any suggestions on budget or specific recommentaions would be appreciated; dealer recommends at least £20/m?

Thanks, Kevin

I'm sure the dealer recommends "at least" £20/m. I expect he'd recommend way more if he felt you'd pay it. These speakers RRP at about £900 and he thinks you're going to pay at least £240 for speaker wire? I assume this is where he makes his margin. However, if co.'s like PMC use bog standard Van Damme cable for their professional installations, why don't you give it a go and save a fortune? You could then budget for a better pair of speakers, if you wanted to spend another £150. Harbeth, who supply speakers to the BBC, recommend your starting point for cable as humble 79 strand, which is about £1.20/m from Maplins. Both of these speaker co.'s are leaders in their field, and know what they are talking about. Harbeth, in their professional demo's (i.e. when they want their speakers to sound at their very best) single wire, and leave the linking plates in. Maybe you could consider buying speakers from either of these brands, because you know they design their speakers using low cost speaker wire?

If you want to understand what thickness of standard copper wire is required for what length of run, try this link, and save a fortune.....
