Speaker Upgrade time again, Decided to splash out a little more this time , £700 approx.

I've narrowed it down to 2 strong possibilities , the Monitor Audio RS6's and the ProAc 110's.

I've already heard the RS6's and like them , thought they had wonderfully taut bass , a must for me.

Was going to take a 2hr drive to hear the ProAc's , Any suggestions/opinions would be most welcome

What would you go for ? anyone heard both ?.

Thanks

What is your partnering kit? If it's bright then the RS6 will be too much.

I personally would definitely drive to hear the ProAcs, also Dali Ikon 6, Neat Motive 2

Im going to upgrade my amp next year as funds allow so that has to be factored in , at present I'm using a Nad C320BEE amp , and Cambridge Audio Azur 640C player .

Are the ProAc's fussy about who theirÿpartneredÿwith ?

My Tablettes aren't fussy. Nice speakers and the brand comes highly recommended. A much better buy than the MAs which polarise opinion. You should definitely think about the Dali Ikon 6 and Neat Motive 2 as well as these are also better than the RS6 IMO.

Thanks for your thoughts

Unfortunatelyÿi cant audition the Neats here in Ireland but the Dali's i can , only i've read the bass can be a little warm on the dali's so i have my doubts , the Ma's bass is suberb, this i know.

the proac is a great speaker for the money and has a very fast, detailed bass but it is a bit bass-light. if partnered with something with a warm tonal balance they could be brilliant. i wasn't keen on the treble of the rs6's when i heard them with my kit.

What sort of music do you like? I listen to a fair amount of dance and chillout and the bass is good. The Dali excels with voice and guitar/piano though.

ProAcs are a bit faster, well my small ones are, but not as detailed or enveloping.

Listen to a wide range of music, lots of modern jazz , motown ,pop , piano/guitar based stuff, not a lot of classical .

Listen to the Dalis too then. They are very good at that kind of thing. But they do look (and sound) better with the grilles on and not facing directly towards you.

"What hifi" mentioned the Dalis main weakness was that their bass lacked precision , this is a big "no no" for me , as much as i want to like them , i really dig their funky look too.ÿ

The various reviews of the RS6's are allÿextremelyÿpositive ,they just advise againstÿpartneringÿwith a bright ampÿ. ÿÿ

The ProAc's 110's freqency response at 33hz-30khz seems pretty incredible for such a small speaker , i willÿdefinitely have to demo a pair .

The Proac 110s are superb speakers and will work well with any music. I used to have MA RS1s and didn't really like them, the 6's less. Just my taste. I found that the bass wasn't well defined and the treble drove me through the wall, literally. The Proacs are rated down to a low Hz value but the quantity will be a lot less than the MAs. No loss in my opinion

Proacs seem to have a sweet, open and airy treble to them but it's not bright like the MAs.

Thanks for your opinion Mr Igglebert ;>)

Its interesting you found the MA's bass ill defined , Does not concur with my own findings butÿI'mÿstill relatively new to the HiFi area and still educating myself along the way.

What did you partner the MA's with ?

Do you still have the ProAc's ?ÿI'm not a hip hopper or dance music fan but i do love aÿreasonablyÿgood quality deep bass.

For reference , Do the proAc's have as much bass as say the B&W 685's ?ÿ

ÿWhat kind of music do you listen to ?ÿ

Two options, one for less, the other for your budget:-

1) Q Acoustics 1050i floorstander - another title's speaker of the year and the company was brought into the world by a former Mission engineer I think. This was from Mission's 1990s heyday. In short, for £350, you could pick a lot worse.

2) Mordaunt-Short Mezzo 6 - £800 but £699 in Richer Sounds.

Both apparently, are superb, the Q's being a little more analogue in their sound, if that makes a difference.

Hi,

Not sure which speaker is better among Dali Ikon6 and MA RS6. However, came across the Stereophile review on Ikon6, which gives a comparison among the two. It says-

<Treble - Equally extended in both speakers, whereas the RS6 has more delicacy and inner detail

Midrange - Both have sweet silky midrange, Ikon 6 has a more holographic presentation, whereas the RS6 is more neutral

Bass - Bass performance in RS6 is far superior to the Ikon 6 >

Having said the above, MA6 definitely wins on the looks and price. I have also considered these two speakers and went in favour of MA RS6.

Both seem to be strong in slightly different ways, However the music from Dali Ikon 6 could be more enjoyable than the RS6 depending on individual taste.

Hi:

I have the MA RS6 connected to CA 640A+C V2 combo. The speakers are just excellent in all departments. I don't find any treble harshness or whatever that's being said about them generally, its really sweet. Bass as you know is stunning. I thought CA really goes well with RS6, but RS6 can always handle better amps in the likes of CA 840, Arcam, etc. I had my RS6's for 4 months now, they sound fantastic now, more musical and room filling. Many dislike RS6's for many number of reasons, but if you partner them carefully, you have spent your money wisely.

Well, I partnered RS6s and RS1s with the Rotel RA03 which isn't known for a tight bottom end. I imagine there are more suitable amps about and the RS6s will sing. Not for me though

Didn't like the B&W 685s either. Blimey I sound negative but taste is taste and not many seem to like mine in the SA1s
