speaker stands

Am i right in saying that the primary aim of a speaker stand is to support the speaker itself whilst creating as minimal vibration as possible. Therefore, would i be correct in saying that the perfect way to listen to a set of speakers, whether stereo or 5.1 for example, is in zero gravity i.e. hovering in mid air. This may sound like a stupid question but i was discussing this with a friend and we were finding it difficult to find a logical answer for our theoretical scenario. If this is not the case can someone tell us why, does a speaker need to be placed on a stand for some reason?

In zero gravity the movement of the drivers would move the speakers, especially if they were ported (I'm assuming there is air in this fantasy world!).

you are right that the stand should have a capabality to avoid any possible vibration. that's why some of them have spike footings. but i believe it's not its primary objective. why not put the speakers on the floor? they are more stable and with less vibration there right?the stand's primary objective is to position the speakers to "ear level" height base on the listener. hi-fi experts say real music can be appreciated if the speakers are within ear level. it's nothing to do with zero gravity also since anywhere you place them, the could not avoid the same pull of gravity.

regards.

thanks everyone for the replies

the reason i mentioned zero gravity in space was merely to imply a speaker hovering in mid air. in this experiment the speaker would be levitated in mid air at ear level. would the fact that the speaker is literally free from vibrating against anything give it the best possible sound?

This sounds like a sub plot in an Iain M Banks novel.........
