In a standard 1930's town house 13'x13' front room with bay and chimney.

Would a set of KEF 3005's be too 'much' of a speaker package? Would smaller, less powerful speakers be more appropriate or doesn't it matter?

Not at all mate. I too have a 30's built semi and I have KEF IQ9's (picture here http://whathifi.com/forums/t/589.aspx) The 3005's would be fine.

Yes, they'd be fine, but the 2005s or 3005s would be better.
