I thought this was rather funny on the Wharfedale web site. They actually say their speakers will sound "dreadful" when new. LOL!

How should I run my speakers in?
Most loudspeakers will sound fairly dreadful out of the box. The sound quality will continue to improve for the first 50 hours of use.
The reason for this is that the moving-coil loudspeaker is a mechanical device. As manufactured, many of the parts have a certain rigidity or tension, that only begins to relax after the loudspeaker has been played for some time.

We design our loudspeakers with this in mind. Their optimum performance is their relaxed state - but in order to achieve this, they will necessarily sound fairly bad to begin with.

So to run in your new speakers we suggest playing music at a moderate (not loud) level continuously for 50 hours.

If you are in a noise sensitive environment, the way to achieve this with minimum disruption, is to stand the loudspeakers on the floor, directly facing each other. Then wire one of the speakers out of phase (i.e red to black and black to red). Their bass drivers will cancel each other out and the sound will be much quieter. After 50 hours, return them to the ideal listening position, REMEMBER to correct the wiring phase on the speakers, and enjoy the music.

I've always admired honesty - not always the best selling ploy though!

What was that Dudley Moore film where he was an advertising executive coming up with honest ads like "Volvo - they're boxy but they're good"?

They are just stating facts and telling the truth jaxwired. Some speakers will take longer than others to run in and some will sound reasonably good straight from the tin but an awful lot will sound rubbish compared to the fully run pair you heard on dem.

They should sack their copywriter! Would have been better to say "the speakers would not achieve their optimal performance level or at their best until... blah blah...". Still honest, but with positive spin!

Or maybe just have gone for it with..........

Dear purchaser, before you ring us up we would like to point out that your speakers will sound tripe for a while. We suggest you slot mezzanine into your disc spinner, put it on repeat for a week and go on holiday.

Yes Crazy People (1990) and the line was 'Volvo, they are boxy but they are safe', great film!

Is this a sneaky tactic by Warfedale, especially if you do not believe in run in times. The hope might be that after a while you get used to the new sound and are happy with it, as opposed to the actual speaker changing sound.
