1st post and first HiFi purchase since 1993 so be kind..... Our Arcam Alpha amp, Marantz CD52 and B&W DM500 speakers are now officially dead !!! OK the system was 17yrs old so I guess we've had our monies worth. Well we've just taken delivery of a Yami system: Amp: A-S300CD: CD-S300Speakers: NS555 OK not hi spec but it should be comparable to the old system. 2 questions: I plan to use my old Bi wires that are 17yrs old, can't remember what spec they are (can look) and just wondered if after 17yrs they'll be OK ? they seem to be in good condition. Also any advice on speaker location. The room is 3m x 5m and is fairly open plan on one side with a low ceiling, solid floors and limited furniture: what is considered as advice when it comes to speaker location ? Many Thanks

A good choice of system. Your 17 year old cables should be all right (cable talk maybe?) but the ends can tarnish, so (with everything unplugged), you could strip the speaker cables back and reterminate them. If its not great cable though, Chord Silver Screen is a good choice.

Generally, as a rule of thumb, speakers should play along the length of the room and be towed in slightly.

Enjoy the new system

Thanks for that. Checked the cables, they are QED but can't find the spec any where on them.

Think I'll aim for the speakers along the longer (5m) wall as you said slightly angled in.

Nice new system you have, hope you enjoy it

Your 17 yr old cable, as mentioned will probably be ok, but i personally would change to the Chord speaker cable, it is very good wire for the price & would be worth the investment. If you can also get the amp end of the wire terminated ready for you - very nice finish & helps protect it for years to come.

No problem. There are a few other things to consider in terms of the room acoustics if you can - such as, its good to have soft furnishings, thick curtains and a book case full of books for example to soak up soundwaves and avoid ringing/echoes.

Let us know how it all sounds when its set-up - a perfect Saturday tasks IMHO
