I have recently purchased an Onkyo TXNR 609 and a set of Boston Acoustics Soundware XS and and looking to start drilling the walls to run cable. I pretty much know where the rears will be located in my 7.5m x 3.5 lounge (approx 1.5m from each end). I do have a dilemma with the front left and right which I would like some advice on.

The TV, soon to be a 46 set will be mounted on a chimmney breast 1.5m wide. To the left of the chimmney breast is a door. Will mounting the left and right speakers on the chimmney breast be to narrow a soundstage? The alternative would be to use existing conduit which runs 1.5m from each side. Is this distance too wide. I have seen some brochures where speakers are located quite close to the TV so am getting a bit confused.

Grateful for some expert views

Cannot you try various alternatives, just using temporary wiring? Then you will be able to answer your question yourself.

Good luck.

it al depends on the room, i feel the left and right front speakers need to be about 60-90cm either side of the TV and for 5.1 the left and right surrounds need to be no higher than 1m above ear level and 1.5m of end of sofa.

i wouldnt be putting any wires into walls until you've had a chance to listen to each position, 7.1 makes a difference too, so id give that a go with either front height speakers or rears if you room can accom. this.

My rears are about 60cm behind head but when watching a movie i pull the sofa out about 1m and it makes a difference
