Speaker Impedance

The last remaining part of my 1980's hi-fi system is an Akai amp and speakers. The speakers are still great but a little large (42 x 25 x 18) and I would like something smaller. I have looked at the group test of budget speakers in the April 2010 edition and the Q Acoustics 2010 or Wharfdale Diamond 10.0 both look good. The only problem is that the impedance is 6 ohms for both of these and my amp wants 8 to 16 ohms. I don't understand the technicalities of this and would like to know more about it. Why do speakers have different values and will these two models work with my amp?

The Wharfedales should be compatible with 8Ohm speakers according to the manual........

In layman terms, the higher the ohm rating the easier the speakers are to drive. If your amp is only rated at 8 to 16 ohm i would find speakers rated appropriately. Your amp would drive a 6 ohm load but it have an easier time driving 8 to 16.
