Speaker hiss

I noticed today that the tweeters on my speakers were hissing quietly despite the fact that i was not playing any music!

They were plugged into the amp which is always turned on along with my cd player. Turning the volume dial made no change to the volume of the hiss.

I figure this is fairly normal, but i just wanted to check? Can anyone tell me why this would happen?

If you have to get your ear within a few inches of the tweeter to hear the hiss, then it's probably no concern. If you can clearly hear it from further away (or you hear humming/fizzing too) then it is not normal.

I find it odd that the volume control being turned down has no effect.
