speaker cables

As an AV newcomer I would be grateful for advice on cable terminations, basically are they neccessary ?

Can connections be made using bare wires to speakers and receiver etc ?

yes you can make connections with bare wire, the main advantage of plugs is convenience tbh

Though I for one have had experience of fragments breaking off and causing shorts. Maybe I'm special.

You can use bare wires on the majority if not all receivers etc but i prefer to use banana plugs if possible as i do think its much tidier & easier to connect up other speakers if you wish to upgrade.
