I am planning to get the Denon AVR-1611 and Monitor Audio Vector 10 5.1 speaker package. For the surround speakers I am planning to the run the speaker cable down one side of the room only. This means that one of the rear surround speakers will have a cable that is 2m extra by length. Will this really affect the sound quality? Or should I just leave 2m extra flak for the speaker that is nearest to the wall where the cable is fed in from? Basically, if the length of the speaker cable varies by a couple of metres, does it affect the overall sound?

Thanks

Sumeet

What a way to welcome a first poster and lose them too!!

Although Alan you are right, there have been a lot of seasoned posters on here that have asked the same question and many disagree with mine and your opinion.

To the original poster; welcome to the forum, don't worry about your cable lengths and don't take any notice of Alan Tigger!

I would not worry about the difference. I have a 6m difference in length on the rear speakers and can hear no issues. I also ran my old audiolab 8000a stereo amp for many years with a 3m difference in length to the speakers and I could not perceive any loss in sound quality, timing, stereo imaging, separation, etc. More importantly nor could my peers who introduced me into the world of hi-fi.

Yes indeed.

For instance, you could then help Alantiggger to Google words like 'infinitesimal' before typing them as 'infanticimal'.

I CAN hear the difference having cut 2m from one channel. The wife don't trip over the wire now. But seriously Alan - if you've nowt to say then say nowt.

This forum continues to be useful at all levels and I enjoy my daily read.

Cheers to all

Starscream02's question is not so silly.

The manufacturer of my own kit recommends (in all of it's relevant manuals) that speaker cables should be of equal length.

I don't suppose for one minute they believe any of their customers could hear differences just because of the different lengths of cable. They recommend equal lengths because of the different levels of inductance and capacitance and resistance presented to the amp by markedly unequal runs of cable.

I am not saying they are right or wrong. Just pointing out that if a respected manufacturer like Naim recommend equal lengths of speaker cable (and I have read similar advice from other speaker and amp manufacturers) then the OP is not alone asking a 'stupid' question.

Manufacturers must have asked it also.

WIth regards to stereo lengths, its recommended to keep the 2 lengths within 20% of one another to maintain balance in volume (Whether anyone could tell the difference is subjective)

With regards to rears it really doesnt matter as you can vary the output to suit anyways

my rears are all different lenghts and I cannoot tell the difference and even then im sure the amp's auto callibration would have sorted the issue. I just make sure that the front left and right are the same length for stereo music duties.
