Sound advice needed .. I upgraded my old amp recently from Denon AVR 3802 to the Marantz SR6003 to take advantage of the HDMI connections and in the reviews the stereo mode is quite good and clean for an AV amp. I like a warm bass ( not disco ) but I find that my old B&W DM 603 speakers are not giving me the sound I want. I am planning to upgrade these. Should I stay with B&W eg. 683, 703/4, CM7/9 ..?? And if so .., Which of these would pair the best with my amp for more clear sound and warm bass towards normal stereo..? Will it be a good idea to use the old DM 603’s as SL+SR and move the LCR3’s to the SBL+SBR ..? Also .., will a dedicated CD player make a " BIG " difference in this setup ..??

Hi

I recently brought the Marantz SR6003 and had the same feeling, a lack of bass. Try this quick fix before you buy:

1.Turn off any EQ settings - better basss without

2. Set amp cross-over at 120Hz in speaker set-up

Simple fix but it resloved my bass issue and i'd recommend the SR6003 to anyone, excellent all round amp for AV and Music

Can't give you any advice over the speaker haven't auditioned in person. I personally use my out of date Quad L11s (originals)~ and have no intension of upgrading.

In general a dedicated CD player will out-play a DVD or BD player in my experiance, below a high end player (£1,000). My 8 year old Arcam 7SE far out performs my current BD player or any previous DVD player i've ever owned.

I remember paying £550, 10 years ago, for a Sony 725 DVD player. What Hi-Fi suggsted it was an excellent DVD player which could play CDs as well. DVDs yes excellent but music - average in my opinion. So dedicated and via stereo phono cables in my opinion.

Have i become that grumpy old man or will someone back my corner here? LOL

I am a grumpy old man, and I'd definitely agree with you. My Denon 2500BT is great for DVD's/Blu-ray, but musically it doesn't cut it with either of my old CD players (exposure CD / TEAC VRDS10), or my current Levinson 390s (although this last is probably an unfair comparison).

I love my 6003 but also found the auto EQ lacking in Bass, The Audassy often comes out Bass light, what I did was wright down the Auto EQ settings for each speaker then transfer them in to the manual EQ (Preset Graphic EQ) and upped the lower bands 63, 125 and 250Hz, only a db at 250 couple of db at 125 and 3-6 db at 63 (6 on stereo Pair 3-4 on Center & surrounds), I also added quite a lot to the sub gain, that did the trick quite nicely. I have My LPF/HPF set at 60Hz, but my stere speakers can take that and your 603 will do that easy, I upgraded from 603 S2 this year to some 805s, big money difference but they are exceptional speakers.

This setting is only for Surround, for Music (CD or TT) I use Pure Direct so only the stereo pair are running.
