I have learned over the years that the What HiFi team hold Sony TV's in high esteem. My previous tv was the 40 W450 series, but I experienced shadowing in dark scenes.Current model is 40 EX700 bought 1 week ago,and despite it being an upgraded model, the picture quality is exactly similar to the older model;dark scenes not handled very well.Bigger is my disappointment with movement-far from super smooth as is sometimes referred to in the Sony reviews. The rest of my system consists of Sony 360 Blu-ray player and DH-810 AVR.Premium Gold HDMI cables.I think the Samsungs in general produce better quality pictures.Any tips/suggestions will be welcomed

Well we certainly didn't particularly rate last year's Sony TVs- they didn't win a single Award, for example, specifically because we'd encountered too many sets with backlighting flaws.

This year things have been a lot better; only backlighting issue we've had with a Sony was a '803 set when the 3D setting jetted the backlight up to maximum (yuk). That was noted in the review, and star rating.

Anyhow, back to your TV- have you run a basic THX set-up, and set all processing to 'off' or low? More in our 'how to make the most of your TV' video here

What tips/suggestions do you want? Are you looking to return your existing TV for another one? What's your budget?

Most of last year's Sony models were slated by What Hi-Fi for uneven backlighting, like this one.

Have you tried plasmas, which generally offer deeper blacks & tend to handle motion better?
