Hi, could do with some help and advice please.

I currently have a Toshiba 37WLT66, with Sky HD, a Sony surround system, Xbox 360 and an upscaling DVD player. I'm going to buy a PS3 soon though, both as a games console and a first step into blu ray. I sit about 3m from the screen.

I take it that I would also benefit from upgrading my tv as well, but am truly stuck as to what to get. I was all set on the Sony KDL40W4500, because of both the review on here and the look of it in a shop. After all the reported problems with clouding etc., I'm beggining to have doubts though. Have since been looking at the Panasonic 42PZ80, but am still concerned about screen burn risks, and the picture in daylight as we have quite a bright room.

It would be good to have some good impartial advice please - they'll both be antiques at the rate I'm going!

Many thanks,  Gav

Both good sets it depends on what you prefer after audition both, as for problems on the sony it,s a minority with this problem every set iv'e seen has looked sharp clean images, natural colours and preformed well with hd content and freeview. I went for a lcd screen over a Plasma for the simply reason i stay up late watching films and quite offen fall a sleep and turning the tv of in the morning. So avoiding the possibilty of any screen burn. Modern plasma can cope much better with this problem now and preform better with games consoles and sd tv. Also the lastest Samsungs look very good 6,7,8,9 series the 9 is the one to go for but commands a high price.I would look at as many of these as possible. And after taken delivery of your new set it's best to make sure your home and have unpacked your product before the driver leaves. to make sure it's in working condition and not scratched. I had a few problems with my and had to return two sets which where really badly scratched along the frame.

I had the same dilemma, looking at the same two sets. The Sony looks fantastic in the showroom and I'm sure that the duff sets are few and far between. However, knowing my luck I would get a duffer, and Sony don't seem to be taking customer support seriously with the reported problems so I wasn't prepared to take a chance.

The price difference between the two sets is expanding with the Sony being over £900 best price now with a 5 year warranty. I just got the 42PZ80B plus the DMPBD35 blu-ray player for £871 all-in from John Lewis, including 5 year warranty on TV, 2 year warranty on blu-ray, and free delivery. I decided this was better value for money than the Sony, with less risk.

A friend has an earlier Panasonic 42" 1080p plasma which I was able to audition in his home environment. The standard defition via freeview is pretty good for the higher quality channels, and blu-ray via a PS3 looks stunning. It is not as 'in-your-face' gobsmackingly bright and clear as the Sony playing Cars via blu-ray in the showroom, but it is very good.

My set is scheduled for delivery on Sat 10th, replacing my 28" Philips CRT which has served me well for 6 years. Anyone want a widescreen CRT? Thought not. :)

Hi,

This is the reason why some choose plamsa over LCD - LCD looks artificially bright and this gives the images a cartoony feel. Images on plasma screens tend to look more natural in colour tone.

There is probably one or two on here who would actually take your CRT from you.

Cheers,

Thanks for your replies.

Had a look at them both in Comet yesterday, and was more impressed with the Sony I have to say. I know it can be seriously affected by the way they are set up and what they're showing etc., but the Sony looked more detailed, with very good blacks. Maybe my eyes are just suited to an LCD!

ÿStill not 100% sure though, so any continued input would be welcome.

Cheersÿ

But thats why you have to trust your own eyes! i looked at the sony and the panasonic and bought the pana i agree that the sony showed a little more detail but i also thought the picture looked processed and somehow artificial....didnt have the shadow detail of the panasonic either, but it cant be denied that their both very good sets
