Good afternoon, I recently got this TV and have it connected to a V+ box and Sony S570 CDP. I am finding the picture is excellent but the sound is very poor and offers no depth at all. Is there any recomended settings for the sound on the TV or V+ box to maximise this or is it just as it is? I moved from a 32" WS Sony CRT so the sound was good as it had big fat speakers on each side so whilst I wasn't expecting the same I didn't think it would be as bad as it is. I do not have an AV set up yet so my other option is to connect if to my Arcam A85+P85 for additional sound with movies etc. What would be the best way to do this?

Any suggestions gratefully received

The Sony TV only has a digital audio output socket. However, you can get analogue sound out of it by using a Scart audio out adapter, giving you left and right audio sockets you can connect to your Arcam using conventional interconnect leads.

You need something like this

but make sure you buy one that's designed for audio output, or one with an in/out switch, as the Scart socket uses different pins for audio in and out, and an adapter designed for audio input, though looking the same as the output module, won't do what you want it to.

The alternative, though more expensive, is to use an offboard digital to analogue converter, and connect this between the TV's optical digital output and your amplifier.

Thanks Andrew. I do plan to upgrade at a later date to an AV amp and surround speakers, but just want something to tide me over so the scart connector + interconnects seems a good way to go until I can upgrade

Hi Andrew, right have the scart connector as you advised. What interconnects would you recommend for a run of 3 - 4m. Don't want to spend vasts amounts of money but appreciate there is always some middle ground.

OK so have I brought the worng stuff or am I just being stupid?

Brought the Nikkai SCART to triple phono out adaptor from Maplin as per the picture / link that Andrew gave. Plugged this into one of the SCART socets on the back of the TV and connected the Audio R (Red) and Audio L (white) to my A85 using QED performance 1 Audio interconnectes, but I still get no sound from the amp. I tried connecting to the AUX and AV inputs on the back of the amp and didn't get anything at all. I had a look and the TV sound settings and tried changing a few settings all to no avail.

Any help from anyone?

Tried again last night after looking at various other forums and still can't get this working so I must be doing something incorrect. This is my setup: V+ box connected to HDMI1 connection on HX803 via Wireworld Chroma 6 HDMI cable. Sony S570 BDP connected to HDMI4 on HX803 via Wireworld Chroma 6 HDMI cable. That's it. Then I am trying as Andrew suggested to connect the Maplin SCART to Phono out adaptor to AV2 and then the left and right connections to my Arcam A85 AUX inputs. Turn on the TV and Amp and select the phono/aux option on the amp, but still no sound. Do I have the wrong SCART connector? Could it be faulty? Am I using the incorrect interconnects? Are there any additional settings on the TV I need to set?

Failing this I may be forced down the road of an off board DAC, as Andrew also suggested, which will be used just for the TV, which brings me to another dilema in that in the future I may want to consider a surround setup to go with the TV/BDP (if the wife allows) so should I get a DAC or an AV receiver with onboard DAC to use purely for 2 channel sound. If the latter what is the best way to connect it to my existing setup (Arcam A85+P85 bi-amped to Kef Q5's with Arcam CD73T CDP).

As you can see I am confused and struggling with this so would appreciated any comments / suggestions. If more kit then I was considering the rDAC, Onkyo TX-SR608 or Sony STR-DH810. Am I mad to be considering a 3 amp system?

Hi D3CYPH3R, as per Andrews comments above:

Did you check yourself? I've seen images of the back that look like phono outputs (below the pc input) and the manual seems to show it can be done.

look under fun features with connected equipment, then audio system, bottom diagram is showing stereo phono connection to a hi-fi. (in the i-manual - which you can download a hard copy from the Sony website)

Did you look at the phono ports on the back of your tv?

OK, so just popped home and tried connecting the VAR/FIX outlets to the aux input on my amp using the QED interconnects and I now get sound on my Q5's

.

Have to push the volume up a lot higher then when listening to my CDP which I guess is down to the source? If I installed a DAC would I get even better sound? I was looking at the MF CDAC which isn't too expensive so if I connected this via the optical out on the TV would thsi be a much better result/Will probably live with what I have at the moment but just a thought....

What about introducing a DAC to connect the optical out on teh TV to the aux on the amp (Music Fidelity V DAC?). Worth it or just a waste of money given that it would just be for the TV?
