Can't help but think this is really bad news!

What's going to happen to OLED now? Can't help but think the LG OLED at £3100 is a serious bargain now.

I am right in thinking 4K can't reach plasma and OLED black levels? I haven't seen one that can. 4K is going to be pretty pants if that is the case.

Or a soon-to-be dinosaur.

Exactly, one seriously good dinosaur though. When speaking with Jules (a calibrator), he just had a customer who bought the LG OLED and he said it beat his Kuro by some way! If I had the money I would buy it for sure.

I think the VT65 beats the Kuro by some way as well though. I would like to have my one back for a day to check because the size might be making a lot of the difference but pretty sure on this.

If noones buys 4k LED they will have to bring out OLED. The big co.s need to sell loads of LED to make some money back though to pay for OLED research

Everyone go buy 4k LED 🙂

I think the VT65 has a better all round performance than the Kuro, but on some pictures it still edges it on black levels, although some black pictures look much better now or the VT65. I doubt I will ever buy a 4K TV, I can't see the point. I am so much more crazy about OLED.

Why are you confusing yourself and mixing 2 entirely different techs? The ability of a panel to display blacks has nothing to do with 4K. A 4K OLED will be equally black as a 1080p OLED.

I don't see this as a bad thing. LG and Samsung have the money for good R&D. Once the technology is established, others will follow suit. I don't see much R&D from Sony in the short term in any case, given its TV division has a "junk status" in the investment world.

I am not confusing it, I know a 4K OLED TV would be better than a OLED TV. The thing is there are no 4K OLED TVs at the moment, and not sure there will be? We have at the moment 4K resolution and OLED TVs, and OLED TVs are much better. I just see OLED fading at the moment, and this is really sad.

4K is a resolution, and LED-lit LCD & OLED are panel technologies. You can have 4K resolution in both the panel technologies.

I know but OLED is much better than a single 4K TV. When and if a 4K OLED TV comes out then it will be king but I doubt it's going to happen now.

Though Sony is making decisions on an either/or basis, and has chosen to invest in 4K LED TV development, whilst reducing investment in OLED tech.

It's possible that we'll one day see 4K (or higher resolution) OLED televisions from multiple manufacturers, but as time goes on, the odds seem longer.

Yep, that's what I'm saying.

I know this might seem a bit crazy but if I could be 100 per cent sure the LG OLED TV was okay and would last me 10 years or so (hopefully), should we all be considering selling our TVs and purchasing it? It's a sizeable jump in quality and not too unreachable at present

You are aware that LG 4K OLED TVs are coming later this year, right? No point in pressing the panic button.

I did not know that, that is good news.

I know it's coming but will we see it? And a what price? Could it be here and then gone?

It's the blues that go first, apparently.

Not with LG's tech, which is why LG is the only manufacturer pressing ahead with OLED for the time being.

And if OLED TV development is limited to one manufacturer's efforts (unless you import your TV from China) several problems may follow:

1. A lack of competition could keep prices high.

2. This same lack of competition may stunt development.

3. OLED is less likely to gain a market foothold and be regarded as a viable technology.

In short, the more other manufacturers pull away from OLED, the bleaker the technology's future looks.

To be honest, if I was investing in Sony, I would expect the same from Sony. OLED R&D requires a lot of investment with little returns. 4K LED has shown better than expected sales, and Sony is selling more 4K TVs than other manufacturers. Once Sony comes out of the red (if at all), then I'm sure it will invest in OLED in the future.

Yes, I think the same. It all depends on LG. It has an opportunity to become a market leader in the technology due to lack of competition. However, it needs to realise to keep the prices competitive, as it will be in the same market as cheaper 4K LED TVs.

Oooooo! We just had a statement:
