Where I live there is a Sony Centre, and within 2 shops along the Shopping Arcade, there is a Panasonic shop. Now what SC have done is to have a top notch 42 inch Pana in the shop with its 600hz cliams and dished it on the factory settings. It basically said all the Pana cliams are bull!

Now comparing the Sony and the Pana side by side, it made the Pana looked rubbish. I am surprised that Pana staff have not gone into the SC and trash the place. In Japan they will do that as the stores are linked to Yakuzas.

Very unprofessional of SC to to this????

Quite a statement!

Where do you live?? If this is the case I am suprised Panasonic would allow it???

EDIT - having read some of your other posts I get the feeling you are not a Sony fan.......

Your posts are getting more and more bizarre, what with suggestions that Panasonic shop staff should destroy Sony Centres, connections with organised crime and now attacks on the company's UK sales representatives.

Is there something we should all know about your motivation? Or should you perhaps take a deep breath and reconsider some of your posts?

Yeah! The SC and Pana staff could have a stand, a la Anchorman! I'd pay to see that :)

Not sure where you live but in Guildford SC they have a Sony mounted next to a Panasonic so one can make a comparison. I am not sure which model of Panny they are using but the Sony is form their W series - not the Z series which the salesman was trying to interest me in. Some aspects of the Sony were better but I thiught that some of the Panny colours were more natural and subtle.
Now for the question....
The SC have a Sony series Z 40inch bundled with a DVD player for about £1400. I am in the market for a 40-42 inch TV (my current Sony 19inch CRT is 21 years old - we dont watch it much!! ) and I would be grateful for advice on what TV to buy. I am attracted by the Freesat on the Panny as I do not have Sky. But a little beguiled by the sales pitch (and the picture!!) with regard to the Sony. I think that I could get a better price than the SC are offering, though!

Grateful for your advice.....Especially Andrew's who sorted out my Toshiba DVD problem many moons ago...

Classic!

Sorry, are you saying that:

a) the physical stores themselves are owned by, or linked to, the Yakuza; or

b) Pansonic Japan have ties to the Yakuza; or

c) Sony Japan have ties to the Yakuza; or

d) all of the above. In which case, why would the Yakuza even care?

I imagine the headlines would be quite interesting:

"The price of flatscreen tvs surges as Japan descends into violence with Sony, Panasonic and the Yakuza doing battle....Must read!"

Some Sony Centres (not us actually) have bought into this idea purely with the aim of enabling the customer to compare the Sony directly with its biggest competition. It is intended to help the customer to make a more informed decision by seeing the two sets side by side - something which they don't usually get to do in a single brand shop. I don't see what is unprofessional about it in the slightest and it really has nothing to do with Panasonic - anyone is entitled to buy one of their products and use it where they wish.

Every time I look you have posted yet another thread or message attacking Sony and/or Sony Centres with very poor or bizarre grounds. I'm surprised you haven't got anything better or more productive to do with your time.

Clearly the Guildford Yakuza have taken their eye off the ball momentarily.

I gather the staff at Heals are boarding up their windows as we speak in anticipation of the coming storm, while the people at the Bang & Olufsen shop across the road are hanging out of the windows shouting 'Tatakai! Tatakai!' (in refined home counties Danish accents, of course)

Fair enough as long as they calibrate it correctly to provide a level playing field.

Otherwise where does it stop?? Do Panasonic retaliate and put Sony TV's on display with the settings messed up too?? Dangerous game if not done fairly....

Completely agree with you (we took the decision to focus our space on our own products).

Ha ha, even as a dane I struggle to imagine how that might sound

Actually I haven't seen the Danish Yakuza around for a while?

Well, back to the topic. As many have already expressed I agree that the approach to bring in a competitor in the shop is problematic. At least you should then inform this company about the approach and allow a representative from the competitor to set up the TV. You cannot expect the Sony employees to have the necessary skiils to do so.

And then perhaps a bit of topic. Many companies have quite 'creative' marketing departments. Panasonic is no different. The 600hertz subfield drive is a good example. This basically doesn't say very much about the picture in the end and many people mix it up with the actual screen refresh rate (but I assume this is part of the intention).

But no one can beat Samsung in this discipline in my opinion. They have managed to create a 'new' type of flatscreen, the so called LED TV.

Whatever the truth of the matter, this does illustrate the basic drawback of single-brand dealers - the lack of comparative demonstrations.

If I get a demo at a Sony Centre, they can't let me compare it there and then with another item that is non-Sony. Similarly with B&O stores.

And it's not just hi-fi/AV - Grays of Westminster is probably the leading Nikon-only dealer in the world, and can demo and sell you any camera to suit your budget, so long as it's Nikon. In their case brand loyalty extends to the occasional snide remark about other brands in their literature ...

RodhasGibson:Andrew Nihongo o hanashimaska?

To my shame, a lot less than I should - but then my wife's English is excellent.

Never mind, at least I can say (adopts Les Dawson voice) My mother-in-law has never understood me. Well, she wouldn't - she's Japanese!
