Picked up one of these which is on its way to me now. I had often heard the Sony players were a bit decent and the ES range in particular to look out for, so I'm looking forward to hearing this one. I'll let you know how it goes, but for now, here's an example of said player below!

Should be an interesting one RS. I've had one or two very good Sony players in the past, including a SCD-XA1200ES that I really should have kept hold of, so I'd be interested to hear your views once it is up and running.

Thanks guys; watch this space! Build quality looks good - 12kgs so no lightweight bit of kit.

I have a Sony XA20ES which is pretty decent player and was quite happy with it, it was when it developed a small glitch and heard it compared to the Audiolab 8200 that I thought it was time to get an upgrade.

Sony used to make some good hifi components in their ES range , we used them a lot at work so used many over the years but can't remember which ones, I hope you enjoy your new toy.

Good Luck

Nice, Big fan of the Sony ES stuff, especially my S9000ES DVD/SACD player-

I think a lot of decent Sony ES stuff is ignored because of the snob factor.

Then Snobs obviously miss some of the best transports in the world?

Congrats on your purchase RS, if it's anything like mine, it will be a complete and total pleasure to use!

(Mmm... nice. Amp, tuner, spare tuner. Just the amp needs some more lights and meters :) )

Just had an email telling me it's been despatched so should be with me in the early part of next week! Depending on where you read, it's either 11 or 12kgs. Same kind of weight as my Denon, so a hefty beast. Seen some very decent write-ups so it'll be interesting to see how it bears out in practice.

Yes, I'd agree and see also Pioneer's Elite range and probably one or two of the other Japanese mass market manufacturers: Akai and JVC and of course Sansui who were turning out the odd impressive and highly specced amp in the 90s.

It's taken the seller a week to post it?

When selling, I have everything already packaged and ready to be despatched the next (working) morning in order to arrive before noon the following day.

I knew upfront it might be up to 8 days to arrive, no biggie. He might be a contractor working away from home, work on the rigs, whatever, he was clear and I'd rather that than a promise of "perfect condition" and some pile of tat arrives on the doorstep!

EDIT: Thinking about it, I'd probably be the same these days. I can't easily get to a post office the next day, I certainly wouldn't be faffed organising a courier to come to my office and me have to lug a 12 kilo box into town...real life kicks in sometimes y'know!

Yip, will pop some up!

Have to say, it'll need to be on the money as a player though; just listening to Postishead's Live in NYC disc on the Denon and it's a bit good alright...!

This since fell through thanks to the seller not producing the goods. C'est la vie. Irons in the fire for a few other things though and just picked up a Sony CDP791 to tide me over. Happy days are (nearly) here again!

Sorry your purchase fell through. I bought a ES Sony tuner last year on ebay when I thought my beloved Hitachi was on the way out.

In the end the Hitachi was fine, and I slightly prefer the sound, though the Sony looks and handles much better. If you'd like it for your ES collection I'd happily pass it on for a token donation to charity. It is a S570ES. No obligation, obviously.

Thanks for the kind offer nopiano, really appreciate it, though I have to say I have radio covered off - if I do listen to it I use the Tune In app, or the Apple TV. Most radio listening though is done at work and rarely at home. But thanks anyway, a nice gesture.
